Hi folks
with few posts to my name on here i will start with a Happy new year to all and a big hello.
Im In Wellington New Zealand although from Hampshire in the UK originally.
I ve had a few Vw's in the past and am now the proud owner of a 1969 cyclops headlamp 411 that is so close to getting its MOT.
im doing my best to get her back to stock as much as i can. on thing that im struggling on is the engine bay set up and all the airfilter/air scoops etc that connectthe engine to the deck lid.
does any one have any pictures of the engine bay that i could see.
heres the car
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3 ... =522587126
i bought it here in NZ and after lots of conversations with the previous owner on the phone my brother picked it up on his way through the country.
When it arrived with me it was not quite as good as described.... but as always im up for a challenge and its under refurb.
structually its sound ( now) its really the engine bay that needs attention.
just replaced the windscreen for the MOT, a headlamp (Fun finding that )
and a few electric and seat belt issues and it gets re checked tomorrow.
fingers crossed.
well thanks for reading and hopefully someone can help me out and fill in the blanks that the haynes and the internet cant fill as yet.
cheers all

thanks guys
Shawn -- not sure on the guards. they ahve been on the car a while according to the previous owner and they fitt super snug so im guessing they were a VW extra.
Shes pretty tidy and has just got its WOF (MOT) this morning. still need some engine work and a revamp on the interior but its getting there. just souced a 2nd pair of front springs to try a cut on them and see how that works. fingers corssed i can bring the nose down a bit.
still trying to work out this engine cooling build though ...
any thoughts folks?

Be very careful cutting springs, if you make it to hard the ball joints at the lower end of the struts will not last long and they are hard to get hold of.
I've looked into bringing the nose down and those clever Dutch/German Type 4 owners substitute their front springs with those from a series 3 BMW (316 or 318 I think).
I got the nose down a tad on mine by swapping the dead old front inserts with some Audi 80 shocks and having a 6 inch stub machined to make them long enough to fit...works a dream. Loads of info regarding lowering on the shoptalk forum in the US

ive just sourced a pair of bmw springs and a new set of struts so we are goingt o give that a go . i agree the worry of ruining the balljoints is not worth the cutting of the original springs.
i'l let you know how it goes.
still baffled by this engine to body cooling section though

Whats the story with the three spoke steering wheel never seen one like that before my variant came as standard with the big plastic I-Beam wheel?

Weren't those steering wheels standard on the earlier type 4's? Not sure - it does look v cool.
Kieron
Re: 411 engine pictures required
I think \Kieron is correct here as my 411 has one of those and so do a couple of the ones at Volksfarmers. Apparently the screen washer works of one of the steering wheel bits much like the horn on other cars.

Well what can I say you have done a splendid job we are really impressed. Shawn has it a little bit wrong about the washers being on the steering wheel. Our estate 411 that we had called Ebby the previous owner had set the washers on the steering wheel instead of having to reach over and push the button on the middle of the dash. We thought that was an excellant idea as it is less distracting. The 411L is the awkwardist of the type 4's with regard to quite a few items. The heat exchangers are different, the clutch slave is a completely different set up. The flywheel is the 200mm which the beetle owners desired to make an easy engine swap. The gearbox is shorter and it mounts are different. We restored one many many years ago. It is still going but the owner has had trouble locating engine mounts as they are different.

I knew I'd seen it somewhere Jane, didn't realise it was a DIY alteration!

Re: 411 engine pictures required
Yes we thought it was a really good idea. It has an electric washer pump instead of working off the tyre so it is a simple set up. The horn worked off the two other arms on the centre of the steering wheel.
Re: 411 engine pictures required
Thanks for the kind words Jane.
Im really pleased with it all.
just a note on the steering wheel. Heres the booklet that i have with the car. 1969 411 interior shot.
three prong wheel, two tone door cards.
The radio looks great and i'll wire it all up at some stage.
thanks heaps to Brian and Gopher for the radio

So ive just had a call from the carb specialist and hes tweaked and tuned and has the engine running a dream.
he said that the carb float had absorbed some fuel and weighed 13 grammes instead of 10 ! hes make some ajustments with this in mind and hey presto ...
new accelorator cable and some more tweaks and its good to go.
its always a long road but the end is worth it.
im so glad i saved this 411 from the scrapheap.
