Just to update everyone, I was in GSF today looking for some front shock absorbers for my 1600A, which they don't stock, they only stock for pre 67 I understand, so I'm still looking. Also a front bearing kit for the car, since someone has actually bent the tapered body of the outer NSF bearing at some point, I've packed it with grease and tightened it back down, but it needs replacing, GSF didn't stock that either, ha.

Anyway, having recently read this thread, I asked about rear bearings for the 412, they do an OEM Bearing Kit, per side, includes the bearing seal, part number 413VG0150 for £11.25 plus VAT, manufactured by SNR, and also an aftermarket Full Bearing Kit, per side, including beating seal, part number 413VG0151 for £6 plus VAT, manufactured by Vetech, which is a GSF own brand.

Just thought you chaps would be interested, say you're in the Type 3 & 4 Club and get 10% off.

These rear bearing kits are the same as a T1 rear, not sure which year though.

GSF do the front wheel bearings - they are the same as the rears on many of the 1970-2000+ watercooled VWs. Just look up Golf Mk 2 or Mk 3, Polo etc. they're not much money, but won't have a Type 1/3 oil seal, but you get a spare watercooled grease cap and split pin instead!

Are you sure the Type 4 rear bearing sets will fit a Beetle? I know the Type 3 is the same, but surely the Type 4 rear hub is a totally different beast?

The guy at the desk said so, but the only way to check is to look at GSF online and check out the rear T1 bearing kits against the part numbers I gave above, I've not had the time to do that yet.

It seems to me the rear bearings are tampered bearings as you tighten wheel nut to about 70+lbs, can't remember the exact figure, a t1 is 200 lb being a solid race bearing of inner and outer,
The front ones of a t1 May fit if that's what our other member is referring too.
We have a company here called bearing man, if you take your bearings in they usually come up with a match.
