brakes

Post by BeeBabs » 13th January 2011 - 2:39pm

I've managed to get a caliper as mine had seized, but I've decided to do the discs at the same time as they are really pitted. Can I buy these or is it a case of getting the originals skimmed?

The VW published wear limit on Type 4 discs is 10mm - certainly the earlier ones, but maybe I guess another 0.5mm wouldn't be a problem, but you might want to check before going to the trouble skimming them. I think you will be lucky getting new ones easily - there are early (up to '72) and late types (from 73). The early types are also used by 1972 on Type 3 so may just be easier to find retail. Otherwise it's a matter of asking around really.

I had a hell of a job with my front disc, bought what I believed to be the correct ones to find that they were the deeper off-set ones.

As arcane has said they are the same as the Porsche 914 and I found mine through a classic Porsche parts supplier, can't remember who or find the link at the moment though...sorry

Good news, just remember that the pads are the same as the 914 ones as well not the thinner earlier ones! And the front wheel bearings, whilst you are there the rear bearings from a VW Polo fit the front of a 412, can't remember which year Polo now though must be getting old!!

The bearings I fitted to mine were off a 1983 polo I think.

Yes, the front wheel bearings on all Type 4 and Type 3 (inner from late '68) are the same as most of the watercooled VW rear bearings.

Can we pls make a thread called "alternative parts that fit my type 3&4"?

I will forget this stuff when I most need it otherwise.

Well...the original plan was that i was going to revamp it with extra features like who stocks the parts,Dimensions from nos items, photos for ident etc but that died a death as people dont like sharing info & theres a fear that if you admit to having nos spares youre going to be plagued with people trying to buy

most other info you might need is in the collective brain,so if you wanna know something try asking..it doesnt always come out of said brain immediately though!

holding a list of who's got what in terms of spares doesnt work either,as people dont like publishing what theyve got & availability/willingness to sell might depend on who's asking
But again,if you wanna know ask

Whatever you do,dont go thinking that if you cant find it,its unavailable & you need to get it remanufactured..ask

I think the idea of the compatibility spreadsheet is brilliant. Specially since most people on here have owned other VWs before these quirky ones we now have and so have quite a few spares from their previous cars lying about.

Forget your revamping...but pls do update the compatibility like the brakes thing that came up on this thread.

... and wheel spacers? Or were those because of the type of wheels you had?

I hesitate to recommend a brake caliper mod where you need to remove and hold upside down to bleed, and maybe fit wheel spacers as well.

Spacers are no problem at all and only about £10 per pair. I don't have standard wheels so they may not be needed for some wheels. I haven't played around enough to know.
As for holding upside down to bleed, once they're on this is not a job that has to be done regularly (maybe every few years) so after a bit of faffing, it's fine, it just means jacking the front end up and having both calipers off whilst bleeding. It would be possible to tap another bleed nipple into the top.
Believe me, for these slight hassles, the extra braking is well worth the effort.

The problem is Peter that VW changed the offset of the disc on the 412 for the 73(?) model onwards so the disc that state they fit the later Type 3 etc don't fit the last of the Type 4s.

Therefore I would ask the vendor of the disc they have listed on that first link to measure the offset to confirm fitment as I have bitten like that in the past...once bitten, twice shy and all that...
