TYPE 4 body panels

Post by Daz Max » 11th April 2006 - 7:07pm

hi, i've been poking around under the car and found both sills are shot. after various mails and phone calls with no joy,i came across a company in brasil that produces every panel for the Brasilia.obviously the front & rear are different but the sills door skins etc are the same as the type 4! i've e-mailed them to find out about shipping costs (god knows how much) but you never know i might be suprised.anyway if you want to check out the catalogue heres the site name;www.igpbr.com all the best daz max. :D

I would like to revive this discussion about replacement body panels.

My 73 412 variant needs some body work. I have two rust holes just behind the back tires. I'm tried to decide whether to replace the panels or have some new metal welded in.

I'm curious if the replacement body panels are readily available.

Does anyone have current information about replacement panels?

Thanks!
New owner of a 73 VW 412 Squareback..52k..I need lot's of help. :-)

Nothing for a Type 4 is readily available, except engine parts that are common with some Type 2 Buses! Oh, and some odds like the rear bumper is same as Type 3 from '70, steering wheel is same as similar Type 3 and Type 1 models, switches - things like that.

I have a Type 4 parts book so can let you know what you're looking for, so you can be sure it's right.

Sills for 411 and 412. We in the past have adapted volvo 740 sills they have a very similar profile. Regarding the front of the rear wheel arch. We have used front wing wheel arch to repair that area. Most front wings do not rot out in that area. The club has quite a few panels dotted around the whole of the UK but no one knows what to do with them. Can the guy with the brasillia spares find some headlights for an SP2 please.

GSF and Heritage have very little for 411/412 mainly engine service parts which are the same for the 17/18/2000cc vans. I know someone who actually has some pattern 411/412 sills. We didnt use them ourselves because they are for an estate or 2 door sedan. We were restoring a 4 door. So the person still has them. :) :)

Jane....everybody...had a proper look at the sills today, and made a startling discovery...

the sills that i thought were bad and needed replacing...it is all surface rust....nothing has rotted through!!! so there is no need to worry about the sills, i just need to clean them up properly and repaint them (or the whole car!!!

But i will probably need help with the fuel tank and electrics....

yes we do but probably be best to get some tank liner. As it is a major job changing fuel tanks on the type 4 it makes sense. It costs about £40 and you get it from frosts. The tanks get fine pinholes which are hard to see. The fastest we changed a fuel tank was 5 hours. that was four of us doing it.

Jane, thanks for that info, i will decide what to do but a cheaper option like you say could be to just seal the tank with sealer...i will try that first, then work on possibly replacing the tank if i have to at a later date.

Much appreciated :!:

Could you be talked into shipping a pair to Denmark? My 411 would benefit from some now sills before next inspection, due February.

I think baby bleu means seals - he uses garage door seals for wing beading. We're talking about rocker panels here, Albert, which we call sills.

Hi there, I see this thread is quite old, but it's the best information I've found so far on replacing my 411 sills. I have a 2 door sedan, the inner and outer sills are pretty bad, I can fabricate something for the inners but I would like to find something suitable for the outers.
Are there still any around?
Thanks, Sacha.
