What would you guys do with this?

Post by blitzVw » 21st May 2010 - 9:09am

Hi guys,

I have this 1968 RHD Fastback that came free of charge with another fasty that I had bought...

It's still quite solid, was never hit and is mostly surface/minor rust. Heater channels etc are still absolutely solid!!!!! 8) As is the pan, with the exception of the battery tray area...

It does need better doors, fenders etc but is pretty much complete - even has all the OG wiring, a very nice and clean OG black interior etc

So, do you guys think that it's worth fixing up or should I strip it for parts?? I'm in two minds about it....Maybe you guys can convince me to build a looker of note

Not Australia, it says ZA on the back - Zuid Afrika (South Africa).
They had wide 5s until around 69 I think.

Yup it is in SA.

SA only had Type 3s until '69. All models, except '69 Autos, were wide 5.

Well, a fellow Type 3 enthusiast had a look at the car over the weekend and said that it is very much doable, was never hit in the front so is still quite solid.

I'll start collecting parts for it after June, will start a thread here when that happens :)

Have a basic idea of what I want to do, nothing radical, just lowered, nice wheels and satin paint...

Thanks all!

So - the project has officially started!

Stripped out the interior, the OG upholstery is still in very good condition...So gave it a thorough clean and put away in safe storage....This car was from a very dry part of SA, so it is still absolutely straight...

Basic plan

- Firstly give front end a thorough clean and lower suspension 2 splines - Lowered Type 3s motivate me. :p
- Clean pans and have battery area welded.
- Paint pans black and paint the interior of the car BMW Frozen gray (satin finish)
- Sort wiring out - needs minimal attention.
- Source engine
- Do brakes etc
- Get car running
-Fit donor doors and fenders and do general bodywork
- Primer the entire car.
- Drive the car in primer to get a feel of it.
- Try sorting registration out - major schlep in ZA to get a car with no papers registered, but will try...
- Once or if registration successfully completed, can have the entire car painted in BMW Frozen Gray
- Then can tweak and 2nd phase of the project can start...

Wish me luck!

Looking for a set of flat rear lenses, if anyone has a set that they would be interested in parting with, give me a shout...

I'm after a Notchback, so want to flog this one. If anyone is interested, please drop me a mail on blitzvw@gmail.com. I do not want a lot of money for the car, more interested in it going to a safe home where it will be restored...so far all the inquiries that i've had for the car locally were for parts, really don't want to break this car :(
