Swanky new stainless exhaust for the fastback!

Post by Dave G » 3rd September 2011 - 11:50am

Just thought I'd post a pic of the stainless system I had built by Turbo Thomas. Some of you may have heard of him, others not, so I though that a picture might do the most justice to the man!

I drove it up to him (in Redditch) and he hand made the exhaust there and then within a day. I use my fastback daily for my surveying company and so could not leave the vehicle with him to work on. Instead he agreed to fit the system onto the car within a day. I wanted an exhaust that a) wasn't more hole than metal anymore and b) came through the standard rear cutout. I was thoroughly impressed with the fit and finish of the job and it's one less thing for the MOT man to scratch his head and 'hmmmm' over! :)

I'm not in anyway linked to the chap, just wanted to share another great company out there who are capable of working within the confines of a Type 3 engine bay!

Hope you like it, I'm chuffed with the system compared to what it used to be like.

Yeah, I love it compared to the old layout, was always a bit too close to the bellows for my liking. Just need to sort out the other parts on the car that should be shiny now!

Well it was about £575 including the J-tubes and a full handmade system (including the silencer, which he made whilst I waited due to the original concept being too large for the gap!), which I thought was well worth it for the layout and attention to detail I ended up with. I could have gone for a cheaper steel version, but I'd already repaired the last steel one twice and so I was determined to get a stainless one made.

Will certainly be using him for my other vehicles down the line!

Nearly a year later, and I'm still deciding what to go for...
Has there been any problems with your system, or are you still happy with it?

Still very happy with it, not had any problems so far and am very pleased about the overall look and the stock cutout being used!

I repaired my steel one about 3 times before deciding which way to go myself! :)

Can you get a stainless exhaust and keep the heat exchangers ?

Yes, I've just had stainless J tubes done instead, but they're the same length as heat exchangers and the main exhaust just slides over these as they would with heat exchangers. I was planning to build a basic box around these J tubes at some point to make some rudimentary heat exchangers, but that hasn't materialised yet! :)

Got my Turbo Thomas type 3 tuckaway in the post this morning and I have to say that after all the umming and aaahing as to whether to indulge, it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever laid my beady eyes on!! When the missus wakes up I'll get her to show me how to post pics and I'll stick a couple up!!

Yes, I figured it was just one less thing to worry about when I eventually got mine done.

Good stuff, looking forward to seeing it!

Looks really neat, are you going to heat wrap the J tubes? Might help keep heat rising upwards.
