'67 Square
Hi
Just to introduce myself, im Justin and I live in Bristol. Ive had a '70 type2 Westy Cali import for the last 6yrs and thats a keeper, if anyone is interested, the build link is here http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2602
So Ive been looking for a Square on & off for the last 3 years when this became available from Mark on here So a deal was struck and I picked it up yesterday!
So it resides in the workshop to have a few things sorted, mainly front beam adjustment or bearing, master cylinder (part on its way) and a patch or two depending what is thrown up later after its been on the ramp.
At the shop
Looking at the pile of paperwork that came with the car it had to NOS wings from T3D about 20yrs ago, these need a patch or 2 now, and ill get some paint mixed and blend in the new with the old keeping the patina as I think thats what gives this SQ a fantastic look.
The plan is to polish the hell out of the OG paint and give the running gear a overhall, a good clean up, get some carpets and run it. They an engine increase......

Re: '67 Square
Well I think we have sorted the beam, managed to get the adjustment bolt undone on the nearside and hit the trailing arm with a mallet, trouble is the other end shifts over, cant undo the other side so soaking in plusgas overnight, recon it has an elongated dimple which can be sorted once apart. More on that to follow.
Rear hand brake was only working one side, this was sorted with adjustment, I need to get 2 rear hub seal kits as these are leaking & a steering coupling so far. I managed to get a master cylinder which is on its way too.
Then we are going to have to fab a sill for the n/s, repair the frame head where the beam attaches, weld a small patch on the o/s front wing, oh and fix an oil leak which I think is coming from the centre case bolt that has come loose (fingers crossed on that one).
Im taking the seats out Saturday (passenger seat wont move back any ideas??) and cleaning the pan with a wire wheel and painting with rust bullet, I think there will be one or two small patches needed but only superficial.
I contacted Spirit of the 50s about a carpet set today, so once I get the samples I will decide on the colour.
All in all it looks extrememly good with no nasty suprises, a testiment to its former keepers

It will do... both sides are linked by the anti roll bar.Creationblue wrote:Well I think we have sorted the beam, managed to get the adjustment bolt undone on the nearside and hit the trailing arm with a mallet, trouble is the other end shifts over
All you need to do is loosen the pinch bolt (on top) on the side that has the M8 screw on the outer face (I think its the RH side from memory) tighten the screw until the play has gone, then retighten the pinch bolt.
In extreame cases you will have to flip the roll bar around to drill a fresh "dimple" on the other side.

Thanks Mike my thoughts exactly, looks like the dimple or the pitch bolt needs putting back in shape.miketyp3 wrote:It will do... both sides are linked by the anti roll bar.Creationblue wrote:Well I think we have sorted the beam, managed to get the adjustment bolt undone on the nearside and hit the trailing arm with a mallet, trouble is the other end shifts over

Re: '67 Square
Bit of an update, spent the morning cleaning any rusty surface under the spare wheel and coating with Rust Bullet, vacuumed everything, took the interior out and got a wire brush in then painted where needed, needs a couple of small patches, under the battery tray and around the tunnel but otherwise all good.
Up on the ramp and the mounting holding the beam on the O/S needs a bit of constructive surgery but otherwise all good.
Are the plastic runners available from any suppliers that go over the seat runners?
My mates dad T-Cutted a section of the paint and it gonna come up a treat, gonna leave that job till after the MOT is on it

Just to let you know that the T3D website is www.type3detectives.co.uk I just could'nt find it when googling (word?) Having not had a need to looks for type 3 parts before I found this most useful. Sills on order along with a set of carb rebuild kits & a hood seal for starters......I can see this is gonna be an expensive hobby

A couple of questions guys, my seats seem to be missing a lever to flip the backs forward? Also the H gate in the gear stick is non existent, Im yet to investigate but im guessing something is worn, I know T2 shifts are strightforward to rectify, what about T3? Ican get 1st to 2nd and reverse (sometimes).....

Re: '67 Square
I'm a bit confused on the seats as I believe that all type 3 cars were 2 door, so no manufacture of non tilt forward seats ?... daft question, they aren't swapped left to right are they ?
On the gear selection, I'm having a similar problem on my type 4 and the main suspect generally seems to be the bush at the front of the rod between the gearstick and the gearbox joint.
Hope that helps, a type 3 expert will be along shortly........

Re: '67 Square
I don't have a pic of the seat to show but there is a silver lever that moves the seat fore and aft, then a know that reclines the seat back, now looking in an old Volks World it showed a Sq with a lever above the know which I assume is the back tilt lever that I don't have937carrera wrote:I'm a bit confused on the seats as I believe that all type 3 cars were 2 door, so no manufacture of non tilt forward seats ?... daft question, they aren't swapped left to right are they ?

As for the gear stick I read your post which prompted me to ask further, thanks for the info.

Yes that's my seats, so they should tilt forward when the doors are open automatically?937carrera wrote:Looks like a '67 car so this owners manual might be useful ??

Or do you slide the seat forward to access the rear?

Re: '67 Square
Bit of progress today, the welding and beam work is being carried out by CJ Motors in Bristol by Nick who does servicing of all cars but has a love of all things air-cooled
The frame head had a hole where the beam attaches, now plated
The crossmember/rear seat support rusted at the base of the battery causing a small hole, now fixed
Tomorrow should bring a pair of sill repair panels & a trailing arm to finally put the beam to bed once and for all

I have done a bit more googling and found the post below - I think you are correct and this should confirm the seat tilt arrangement for you.

Re: '67 Square
You've a photo of the door jamb in this thread, which shows the little lever that automatically releases the seat back. They stopped the complication later!

Re: '67 Square
Beam saga continues.............
Right replacement trailing arm turned up, unfortunately it wont sit in the beam, it goes through the bearing ok but fouls the bush So at least I know know why the old TA was filed down and why there was movement in the 1st place. Had the filing been just at the end of the TA then it would have worked fine.
So next plan is to machine 1mm off an inch of the arm to get it trough the bush

Re: '67 Square
Hi Justin, the seats should release automatically when you open the door as originally they had cables that ran from a fitting on the door pillar. The cables run round to under the seat to release the seat latch. Unfortunatally these were rusted solid when i got the car. The cables should be in with the spares i gave you. If you look under the seat you should see a metal bracket on the seat base and a metal arm that clips onto it. I used to just reach under the seat and pull the metal arm to release the seat. Depends on how original you want to go but think all the bits are there to reconnect the cables. Were you contacted by Austin who had the front beam bearings?

Ah I wondered what those cables were for I will reinstate them at some point as my wife will be using it next summer for the school run and it will make life easier.markthehat wrote:Hi Justin, the seats should release automatically when you open the door as originally they had cables that ran from a fitting on the door pillar. Austin did mail me thanks mate, but the bearing seems fine, once the trailing arm is turned down a touch and it all bolts together I will know for sure, but the bearing seemed nice and tight around the section of TA that went in yesterday. Fingers crossed it will be sorted tomorrow

Re: '67 Square
If austin doesnt want too much for the bearings i'd buy them anyway and keep them for the future !! or there's most likely somebody on here who could use them. look forward to seeing at next years DATM SHOW !!
