type 4 sees daylight after 15 years!

Hi all,

My girlfriend & her sister have just inherited a 411 LE...it's been tucked away for 15 years

Their farther (who owend the car) was a former Type 3 4 member.

I'm looking forward to pulling it out & getting it going & cleaned up.

Firstly my condolences for your girl friend and her sisters loss.

Secondly..... Wow!!

Wish I could inherit something like that insyead I think when my parents go all I'll inherit is bills :roll:

There seems to be a few Type 4s coming out of hiding now. Good to see.

We're hoping to get up to Stanford Hall again this year.

From what I have heard sounds like there might be a couple of others as well.

Look forward to meeting another Type 4 owner.

Can anyone tell me the correct battery I should buy?

Also - does anyone know the fuel line diameter? It’s the fuel injection model.

I replaced mine with a Bosch one S4005 540A(EN)60aH

As for the fuel line I replaced mine but can't remember what size it was, sorry.

It's hard to find the correct cotton braided 7mm fuel line in good quality, so I suggest you use good quality 5/16" which is a bit easier fit and doesn't split so easily on the spigots. There are a few places where the thicker wall will be a bit tight. you'll probably need new clips most places anyway. The engine cover plate is one of the tight places ISTR.

It looks well cared for - lucky you!

Thanks for the info...I had trouble with fitting 7mm fuel lines to my bay camper. I installed twin carbs which requiered 7.5 mm fuel line but I couldn't find any so used 7mm which I thought was good quality. Around 200 miles later the pipe had started to break away internally (at the ends) & caused havoc with the carbs. Many hours of fun spent tracking that problem down!

Car seems to be in good condition & I'd love to tke it on but I think the girls want to sell it on asap as the garage is costing them money. I'm still trying to convince the girlfriend it won't take up all my spare time + the cost of an extra garage will be ok....

I'd like to at least get it on the road again!

I found that the shorter pipe in the middle from the crankcase breather has quite a strong vacuum through it and kept on collapsing the original breather pipe I replaced it with.

In the end I had to use a thicker wall 1/2 inch car heater hose.

Not the original red colours I'm afraid but servicable on a daily.

On looking at yours I notice a few extra bits that aren't fitted to mine, firstly the little pipe fitted to the top of the bent connector on the top of the crank case breather box?

You air filter looks different too?

What is the silver rectangular box in the lower left corner of the picture> Is it an electronic ignition of some sort as it looks like it is attached to the coil by the yellow wire?

I'm just being nosey :lol:

Good luck with gaining permission to keep it for a little while at least...you might even prefer it the bay ;)

Hi Shawn - If I remember I'll take some more detailed pics of the bits you mention the next time I see it.

You're welcome to have a look if you're ever over this way - i'm usually around at the weekends

I can't ever imagine selling the bay...I've put soo much work & time into it over the past six years it's part of the family

Hi - went over to the car yesterday to pull it out (my god these cars are heavy!!!) & had a look at the bits you mentioned.

The small pipe from the breather conection is capped closed...I imagine the "U"fitting isn't the right one.

Not sure if the airbox is different - i've only got my friends T4 motor in his van to compare with & thats running twin carbs so no filter.

The silver box must be EI - White wire to dizzy, yellow to coil & brown to earth.

Any plans to make any shows with it this year?

And lets hope its easy to get back on the road, is it going to be a daily runner? Mine is and its great...most of the time :roll:

Yeah hopefully make it to some one day shows. It's not going to be a daily runner as i use the tube every day - so don't drive that much anymore but it will be out on the road ready to go :)

Would be good to line up with some other type 4's at a show :D

I found the paint mix codes the other day...i'll have a look for it...
