An interesting 70's paddock shot featuring a Type 4 Variant.

Shame about that Porsche 917 spyder in the way!

Looks like a split screen van in front of it. I guess tha Porsche goes well with owning VWs. You'd be interested in the Quest TV program Beetle Crisis, as they have a few minutes with a Le Mans Ferrari body (bought for £500) on a space-frame chassis being developed for racing. (Who knows when that was, though, as I think Quest specialises in rebroadcasting old programmes!).

I did spot the van, but thought it looked more like a bay...

I've not seen that program, and I'm not sure I even get the channel, but I will have to check it out.

There was a Discovery program of the same name a few years back, it featured Steve Rea, who used to own a Squareback and contributed to this forum.

There were two of them restoring a 1302 I think... Steve did all the work, while his mate stood around moaning and drinking tea... it made good TV I suppose!! ;)

I've done a little digging and found the Porsche in the picture is the 917/10 entered by the Finnish AAW team and driven very to great success by Leo Kinnunen in the 1972 Interseire series.
I don't know much about it except it was a european race series for Can-Am type cars and Leo dominated it between 71 and 73, winning the championship each year in the 917.

1972 was the only year the car appeared in this livery and with "COLT" sponsorship though.

There's a good vid here of what went on:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dd8lANleSQM

Beware, there's a nasty looking crash at 02:00 - so skip it if that sort of thing upsets you - this was back when motorsport was dangerous... :(

In the end our man comes home first and is shown celebrating the win.

Awesome video clip...the drivers back then must have had balls of steel!

There was a documentary covering the early years of F1 on recently that highlighted how dangerous motor sport was in its formative years with many fatal crashes which would be totally unacceptable by today's standards. Some things have changed for the better

I think you're right about the Bay.

The shape of the fronts of the cars in the Youtube video look somewhat similar to the Ferrari body being shown in Beetle Crisis.
