1973 Fastback 1600E restoration project
1973 Fastback 1600E restoration project
I bought this Fastback about 3 years ago. I was coming up to where I wanted to be on my Beetle project and wanted something new to start working on when I was done. I've been working on it slowly because of shift work but I have lots of body work done now. At the moment, I'm stripping the engine and getting parts soda blasted for the rebuild. Once that's done, I'll get started on the interior and getting it re-sprayed.
I had to replace the whole front section. I acquired another front panel from Type 3 detectives and was able to do the repair job.
I made up two supports on casters for manoeuvrability in my garage.
I sourced a set of front wings. They were in pretty good condition. I got these from Type 3 detectives also.
A panel beater friend, Ted did a fantastic job on the bonnet by cutting out the rust and welding in new steel. It was finished off with leading.
You can see more of Teds good work in this one. He's some man for one man.
I dropped out the engine and gearbox. I have to do a big clean up in the engine bay and strip down the engine. I'm getting there!
I removed the flywheel and fitted and new crankshaft oil seal.
I'll be taking off the engine heads to grind in the valves seeing as I've gone this far.
Some of my engine parts soda lasted, primed, painted and lacquered. Looking good. Done by Sodablast in Cork.
Will keep you posted on future work. Motivation pending of course. I get a lot of that from reading all the projects here, like Marco and Danny Lord to mention a few.

Re: 1973 Fastback 1600E restoration project
You mention about taking off the heads - one of the most important things to check is the amount of rock in the valve guides. With the valve stem flush with the top of the guide, move the valve head side to side. The wear limit of rock is given as only 0.8mm, so be wary of any guides where the valve rocks more. If valves guides are badly worn, it is possible for the valve to hit the seat repeatedly out of true, and then the valve head can break off - expensive tinkling noises then occur and holes in pistons and a seized engine quickly follows!
