68 Fastback
Hello everyone, I bought my first type 3 from the adds here, a few months ago
ive been into aircooled vw's for a long time but not had a type 3 before.
my intensions are to fit msw foosh type wheels and a 1915 motor I built for my bug (that still has to be run in).
these pictures are a few months old and a bit of work has gone on since then.
the car is needing pan edge repairs and a new spare wheel well, not bad at all
ive been collecting parts and am about to start repairs,
the motor
1915cc
40 x 35 ported heads,
8.75:1 compression,
engle w120 cam,
counter weight crank,
DPR 12 lb flywheel
44 idfs on short type 3 manifolds?filters (lucky find)
a 1.5" merged type 3 stainless header + mondo backbox
im keeping the stock motor to go through and freshen up so it could be returned to stock.
Rust free front end cut
bumper mounts

Re: 68 Fastback
That was all a few months ago, now I have stripped most if it down to do some repairs to the pan edges and the heater channel return edges. I also converted the rear drums to Porsche patern, bought Porsche pattern discs and new front callipersas Gsf had a deal on
Modifying drums/hubs
Wheel on
Cant seem to post pics??

Re: 68 Fastback
This is my first type three, just getting my head around them
And how scarce bits for them are, a new bit came today ( that I bought weeks ago!!!)
Not sure were to fit it yet
sorry Colin, thanks for your comment , getting to like the wheels there growing on me, ideally I'd like some cookie cutters with polished lips.

Re: 68 Fastback
Thank you its made a big difference to the time/quality of the repairs I can do.Editor wrote:Good looking section - well done.
I did look at buying repair sections but I only need the very edges so would be a bit of a waste. plus I get to keep the tool.
im nearly done on the drivers side edge. made up from 3 corner bits and 3 straight bits as I can only bend 15" at a time
bit of zinc paint on
and I finally bought some panel clamps, its now loads easier and no more burnt fingers
I need to construct this back corner as the rot has bitten deeper here, this was the good side too, until I started poking about
looking forward to getting onto the otherside, the pace is steady but making progress and finding it quite theraputic

Not much spare time latley but slow progress is better than none.

Re: 68 Fastback
Thanks Chris , yes a really good investment, had a few wire feed issues with my Welder, so doesn't look so good in last shot, good penetration tho, so should clean up OK.
Looking forward to getting this side painted up.

Re: 68 Fastback
I had wire feed issues due to the wire getting rusty, but I doubt that's your problem, judging from the rate of progress!
Is that a full-flow filter holder you had a photo of on your 21st May post? A friend in the USA has one on the end of the rear engine mounting cross-bar, which needs machining for the connections on the case. Let me know if photos of his assembly would be helpful.
An Aussie friend is putting in a remote oil cooler with a piggy-back adapter under the oil cooler, and modifying the tinware to take the extra height and still look authentic. Hopefully, he'll then be able to run it in the summer heat without worrying it will cook.

Re: 68 Fastback
You could be right the wire is old, I found the reel in my cupboard after buying a new one, its been there at least 3 years, My sip mig sometimes acts up if its been stood, i've got the parts for a separate feed transformer mod, that I've never got round to fitting, now could be the time. I'll check out the wire first.
If you have pictures of the filter head mount, that would be great thanks.
I still have to look into, converting the type1 engine to type3 set up.

Re: 68 Fastback
I have wondered about a type 4 oil cooler? , as I've seen type 1 motors with them using modified shroud and tins.
Maybe easier on a type 3 engine?

Re: 68 Fastback
I've sent photos direct. Generally in the UK extra oil cooling isn't needed unless you're looking at a very modified engine. I'm a 'stock' guy so I'll just push that line!
I keep my welder in the house - I destroyed two rectifiers due to heavy condensation by using the welder in a damp garage, before I thought to keep it dry, which also got round the rusty wire problem. Mine is a Sipmate 100 - probably more than 15 years old by now. It can be a bit temperamental, but with clean metal works decently. Best thing I got was an automatic helmet.

Re: 68 Fastback
Hi mate not got the pics? Were did you send them?
I did a drive wheel brace mod ( that I found on mig weld forum) that cured my sip.
It just doesn't like being stood for any length of time. Maybe in the house would be better.
And yes I'd love an auto helmet.

I think they've gone into oblivion - don't appear on the sent items - I've had this happen a couple of times - maybe after the computer has had a nap and doesn't re-awaken properly (I know the feeling!). I used your email from the forum (owner's privilege!).
I'll try again later.

Wow im slow, hadn't realized you'd started a thread on here mick. I must say the standard of the work is very high. And after seeing what both you and moler have done with the shrink stretch I now want one! Looks like I best get some junk solid and buy some useful tools.
Also, autohelmets are amazing, ive had mine for about 3 years now and it was worth every penny. Spend it if you can afford it.
