68 Fastback
Re: 68 Fastback
They seem to be down to below £20 in the UK on Ebay. That's about what mine cost when I got it while in the USA for a Type 3 event over 10 years ago. It's taken them that long to come down to a sensible price in the UK though. Rip-off Britain!

Eyup Broady, yes been here a while now.
The shrink/stretch is an amazing tool. Makes loads of repairs possible.
Have a look on you tube, my favourite purchase so far, I'm looking at welding masks next.

Re: 68 Fastback
whilst this was going on, I ordered some panels from Germany,
a pair of rear seat lower corners
and blew the budget on a pair of full cills
also, as i was jacking up the car to remove the passenger side wheel,
it flopped sideways???? on closer inspection it turns out the bottom ball joint bolt has sheared!!! allowing it to fall out, only thing I can say is im really happy to find this now. does make me wonder. How long has it been like that?? Scary stuff.....

Re: 68 Fastback
Looks like the wrong bolt has been used - they shouldn't come out any significant distance, and shouldn't be able to release the ball-joint pin. The bolt should go though where the ball joint is waisted!
The under seat repair patches are rather easily fabricated, particularly with access to a stretcher/shrinker. I had to cut little fillets out to curve the sheet round, but it gave something to weld into. Sills are a different story though. Nice work!

Re: 68 Fastback
Last bit first, I'll have a look at bolt I agree looks like some one has forced on oddball one in.
I'll be checking the car over carefully now!!
And I'm not that impressed with the seat corners I thought they would save time, they also have pie cuts everywhere
I should have made them myself, but I'm trying not think about it too much .
And finally the cills..... They look a pretty good fit at this stage, they will need a fair amount of trimming to fit.
They do have marks/lines from the pressing process and a few small wrinkles here and there but not bad at all, also have a small piece of wheel arch (which is rotten on my car) so will help me no end. My car had cover cill/door steps that I tried over these and they fitted as good as they did on the car, im sure without too much work they will look original ,so I'ts a big thumbs up from me

Re: 68 Fastback
I don't think the guy in Germany has a very sophisticated workshop to make things in. He could do with buying a stretcher/shrinker too, but at least he's trying to supply stuff that's needed. Unless it's visible externally, a sound repair is what's needed, and as most of our structure is covered, it doesn't matter much how pretty it looks, apart from the satisfaction of an 'invisible mend'.

Re: 68 Fastback
You make a good point there Dave. I was unimpressed with myself for buying them, as they are a bit crudely made compared to what I could have done... BUT, I will say a good fitting piece, that will work, and I would recommend them to others. They do fit which is where I'll save time, trial and error etc. But yes I was being lazy. which is why I wasn't as happy (with myself) as I am with the cills as I couldn't make them at home. So another thumbs up for the seat bottom corners

Re: 68 Fastback
If you're fitting the lower outer seat-belt mountings, try to save the heavy pressings that act as backing on those panels. The nuts may be good enough to reuse, but the plates spread the load well, and look right from below for the MoT tester.

Re: 68 Fastback
Where did you get your rear bumper mount panels from? they look different to those I can find on the net, more accurate.
Also I've just replaced both sills on my 70 Fastback with the same ones you are going to use. They fitted very well except for at the front where the profile was not quite right, (so my panel beater said. I can post some pictures here on your topic if you like.
Cheers,
Craig

Re: 68 Fastback
Would a partial template of the Rear bumper mount panels be of any use Mick??
I fitted what I believe were genuine vw panels a few years ago & took the opportunity to draw around them before fitting.. I gave up on making true templates due to the difficulty of representing the swaged edge, But might be of some use?

Re: 68 Fastback
I'd like to see a pic or two please purplepeter.
Re: 68 Fastback
Hi Mick,
Here's what I started with. Both sills were shot and the left side was badly rusted by the wheel arch.
Under the skin
Sill being offered up
Front was a bit of a problem
So they cut the end off and used the bits to remake it
But they did a good job, all finished. The other side is equally as good
I did this with the body on the pan, if I was to do it again I would separate the two to be more confident of a 100% job. But i'll fill it up with fish oil and rust inhibitor and it should be good for many years.

74 westy- it looks like they've missed out the inner strengthening web panel! (That's the big heap of rust that drops out when You remove the outer sill)
