Next stripped the paint from the drivers front inner wing, to see what the previous owners metal repairs were like.

It wasn't bad at all so I'm going to leave as is. I can do without the extra work.

Next was to clean up the rust and paint from the front trunk area.

Removed all the Shultz with petrol and stripped back the paint to reveal any rust.

I have treated all the rust and bare metal with POR 15 metal prep.

This weekend was a bit of a break through with the restoration. I had been using the floor pan as a template when fitting the heater channels. So I was wheeling it in and out, so could really finish the floor pan off until this was done.

So this weekend I finished the top coat of gloss black on the top of the floorplan. Which means I can start fitting nice new shiny things back, which makes a change from removing stuff all the time.

And 10 months after purchasing them I go the CSP rear brake disc conversion fitted. Also fitted the front discs to the spindles too. Just need to fit an upper ball joint to the front beam and I can get the discs fitted to this and the beam fitted soon too.

Brand new wheel bearings have been fitted with new flexis. In the next few weeks, I'll make some new copper brake lines.

Whilst I was in the mood of fitting new shiny stuff, I fitted the hand brake cables and handbrake and fitted new heat exchanger cables.

Also got the pedal box assembly bits and pieces out ready to be fitted some time this next week.

So these last few days I've been prepping what I've done so far for paint. I'm fed up of welding at the moment so need something different to do, even though I've still got loads of metal work to do at the back end.

Then a bit of filler to smooth out the welds. Pretty chuffed that there's very little filler needed, plus none of this is even seen as it's hidden by the wings.

Next will be another coat of primer to see how it is.

Found a bit of bad news, I plan on fitting a set of Porsche teledials on this, hence the Porsche pattern discs. Unfortunately the rear wheel was rubbing on the sub frame. The bit where the bump stop would hit.

I have several options I think, trim the sub frame, fit a narrower tyre or fit spacers. I'll try the cheaper option first I think.

I also tested the front vents below the windscreen to make sure that I had no leaks. Having read hundreds of thread and posts I knew this was a weak point. I poured water down, and it leaked inside under the dash. So it looks like I'll be stripping out the dash before I bolt the floor pan to the body.

Check the water leaking isn't simply blocked drain tubes. In the UK it's normally not simply that, but leaf and dust debris does get caught at the bend in the rubber tube from the right-hand end of the drain tray.

So next was to paint the whole front end in high build primer once all the flatting and sanding had finished.

First off though I treated the bare metal and rust in the front with POR15.

Then primer:

During a few spare minutes and to give me a break from painting and welding I temporarily fitted the steering box, track rods and master cylinder to see how it was and i preparation of me doing the brake lines.

Unfortunately there was no getting away from the rear rust and rot. So this is what was tackled next.

Here are pictures of the rot.

Here are some repair shots, thought I took more, but this is it for this side:

I tackled the rust on the other side but for some reason I either didn't take any pictures or I can't find them ( I deleted them by mistake). A bit gutted about that.

Anyway, all new metal added on the other side, once this was done I needed to remove all the old underseal and stone chip from the engine area and rear arches.

Once all this horrible crap was removed, it was a few days of degreasing and rubbing down ready for paint.

First I masked certain areas off that I only wanted stone chip applied, this was the arches, above gearbox area and a band around the lower part of the engine bay, I used Upol gravitex stone chip which paints on really well, very impressed with this paint. Then another coat of high build primer.

This was then left overnight. I rushed to do all this in the knowledge that the weather was going to be very good over the weekend and that it should all dry very well.

Next I painted the whole car (less roof and pillars) with white top coat. Several coats later we have a finished painted car. Really chuffed with the overall result.

Now that all the painting and welding is finally done, the best bit now is to fit everything back.

So back to the floor pan where I made up new brake lines and got them fitted. Fitted the handbrake and handbrake cables. And fitted some sound deadening to the floor.
The trickiest of them all was to rebuild the pedals back which took the best part of 4 hrs.

Next was probably the hardest job yet, fitting the floor pan to the body.

In all it took 3 nights, about 15 hrs to get it aligned and bolted in. I did it eventually with the help of my wonderful wife.

I did fit it without the front beam as I remembered when I took the front beam off (Type 1 4" narrowed) how tight it was against the body, so thought that this would cause even more problems, glad I did.

Glad it's in and that I don't have to do that again.

Added front bonnet seal and rear arch seals.

Image

Then another night (4hrs) to fit the front beam. It was a right b%$$er.

All in, minus spindles and discs:

Next fitted steering box and new steering bush thingy.

Image

Then fitted the metal gravity brake lines and new fluid bottle. Disappointed about the fraying blue cotton on the brake pipe. Not sure how I can resolve this. Don't want to take it off to fix.

Then fitted the discs, spindles and tie rods back.

Another big weekend, engine and gearbox fitting.

Went relatively smoothly, went in and bolted up. Gear linkage and gear knob also fitted. Engine harness hooked up to everything.

A day or 2 after fitting the engine I fitted the battery and turned the ignition key. A fuse popped and I smelt burning. Not good.

I then noticed that smoke had started filling the garage, not good. I quickly discounted the battery.

I eventually found the condenser and points wiring burnt up. After a bit of fault finding I had wired the coil up wrong. Back on the internet then to order a new condenser and set of points. I had hoped at this point that I had not done any other damage. Only time will tell.
