Re: 1971 Fastback KBY 217K winter 2016 tidy up
The wheels are a nice contrast to the rest of the car and given its rare to see tele's in anything other than silver or black. I like.
Those tubbs seem to have been let if very nicely, how does the top shock mount? It looks like the ear on the beam is close to the inner arch so you wouldnt be able to get a bolt in/nut on?
Might just be the perspective of the photo.

Tubs are lovely and well executed. The top shock mount simply bolts to a captive/welded nut in the beam (Like most other beams) The beam is very close to the inner arch.

Re: 1971 Fastback KBY 217K winter 2016 tidy up
I've now started on my sounds .
I don't want them to look out of place so trying to do every thing as basic as I can (well that's the limit of my skills anyway)
Luckily I originally bought the car with a bamboo shelf, which i hadn't got round to fitting, so this has become the platform for all the speakers, media unit and air ride controller.
Now putting my wood working to the test;
Had a few ideas, this one was binned as it hit the underside of the dash
Settled for lying everything flat, and build it up a bit. I'll have to cut a hole in the bamboo shelf you've gotta do what you gotta do
So this is what I plan on having it like:
Might blend some of it in with filler, then cover with grey acoustic carpet (The colour matches quite well).

Have used the grey carpet to house my air ride switches. Don’t look out of place at all against the original carpet. Love the progress! Bet your glad you went to max now eh!?

Yeh, they were wired like this when I bought the car. I like them too
When i did the re-build I found that there wasn't actually any side light bulbs in the head lights, so I decided to extend the wiring and re-fit new side light bulbs in the headlights too. Now I have both options
So i can just un-plug/re-plug to which ever side lights i want now or have the option to have both on at the same time

Re: 1971 Fastback KBY 217K winter 2016 tidy up
Well this woodworking malarkey is slow going. I've spent 2 weekends and nearly an hour each night with not much to show for it.
So I've done my speaker pods and carpeted them
Made brackets for the bamboo shelf, welded a nut one end of a strip of metal and a hole in the other so that I can secure it to the bolt fixing the inner wing. Done this for both sides. I've then made some rear hooks which will take the weight at the rear, these just need painting up (I think the rear of the shelf was originally held up with cable ties).
Drilled a hole in the rear of the glove box (hated doing this to an original, but needs must). Just need to carpet the little pod I've made for the bluetooth device and air ride programmer.
Pretty happy how it's turned out, not in your face, a bit retro'ish. (I could have done a stupid mental build, but I don't think it would have looked right)
Next to do......the rear parcel self and amp.

Re: 1971 Fastback KBY 217K winter 2016 tidy up
Classy and dignified, just a like type 3. What its like with the parcel shelf? Ive never had one fitted. Always imagined that it would restrict leg movement, but lots of people fit them so I assume im wrong?

Re: 1971 Fastback KBY 217K winter 2016 tidy up
I bought the car with it fitted, but have only just got round to fitting it now, it seems fine on leg room. I guess depending on what height you are it may be restrictive. Only time will tell I've not been on the open road yet though.
It was a pig to fit though, not straight forward at all.

Re: 1971 Fastback KBY 217K winter 2016 tidy up
So started on the back shelf.
Again didn't want to cut anything up and ruin the original metal work so I've opted to build around the back shelf and then hope i can carpet it all in one piece so that it looks original and not too out of place?
I'll need to drill a couple of small holes underneath so that i can secure it.
Progress so far, mdf, expanding foam and body filler.
This should hopefully sit nicely on the back shelf.
Watching all those car shows on TV really does pay off, as I've learnt loads of ways to do new things, regarding expanding foam etc.

I applaud you for keeping the metalwork original ond the work making the loudspeaker supports, maybe you will also also find some audio equipment shows on TV as well. I'm a bit concerned that with all that expanding foam there isn't enough volume of air behind the speaker to create a good bass response ?muddy wrote: ↑24th December 2019 - 6:28pm

I see your point there, never even thought of the bass response from the speakers. I can scoop more foam out that's no problem. The speakers are 5.25" 2 way focal so not massive. I was more concerned about the rattling and creaking, hence the foam.937carrera wrote: ↑24th December 2019 - 6:55pmI applaud you for keeping the metalwork original ond the work making the loudspeaker supports, maybe you will also also find some audio equipment shows on TV as well. I'm putting a sub in the rear boot, so will have some bass, although that's not in a conventional box so not sure how that'll sound

Re: 1971 Fastback KBY 217K winter 2016 tidy up
Been tinkering over Christmas.
Got my rear speaker pod smoothed out with filler.
sits nice on the backshelf. Really happy how it' turned out.
Today I carpeted it all, I wanted to do a single peice which then flowed up towards the rear screen, as if it was OEM. But after several attempts and head scratching I just couldn't get the tension around the speakers to stop wrinkles occurring in the fabric. So opted to cover the speaker pod and top rear shelf seperately.
I'm well happy with the results, doesn't look like i've just bolted them in. Looks OEM which is always the look I try and go with when modding stuff.
Next to do is the amp and sub woofer install in the rear boot.

So it's been a slow and laborious jobs doing the audio install (It was supposed to be a relatively easy and quick job in my head).
So a week back I completed mounting the amp to the back of the seat (bootside). Used M6 riv screws into MDF, niffty little things, allows me to hide and bolt everything together from in inside where the back of the seat is.
Just need to get it wrapped in fabric.

Re: 1971 Fastback KBY 217K winter 2016 tidy up
Next was to create a sub woofer box. Now I'm going to upset a few folks here.
So I didn't want to just ahve a run of the mill carpeted box, it just wouldnt look right. I toyed with a suitcase, nice idea and all, but done by many people. So I opted to try my luck at popping one in an Aircooled Accessories Cooler box, These things aren't that cheap, but comapring it to a ready made mdf box with a bit of carpet it was too much extra in cost.
To go in it is an Alpine 8" SWG-844 sub.
So, I proceeded to chop up the cooler box. Took some doing. And took me over a week to complete. Here's it is:
How it will face when finally fitted:
I'll add a coca cola sticker on it or something.
I've since wired everything up and it offers some decent bass, it's not perfect (and hence why it may upset purist audiophiles) but it produces bass and that's all that matters

Re: 1971 Fastback KBY 217K winter 2016 tidy up
This last weekend and evenings this week, have been simply re-wiring and wiring the audio in.
Whilst the radio has been removed it's given me decent access underneath the dash, so I have fitted a retro style lighter in the dash (Where I had originally fitted my screen wash button) and subsequently re-located the screen wash button above the light and hazard switches
I've wired up the amp and media unit, which has now been trimmed. Only thing left to do now is to fit everything back in; Radio, bamboo shelf and front speakers.
Next job will then be to finish the rear boot floor and re-trim-hopefully get that done over the next week.
After wiring everything up I noticed that the media unit had a permanent on/off switch, so when battery power was turned off and back on again it would automatically power back on. So I have craftely opened up the blaupunkt stereo and added a new wire to the radio's on/off switch. I can now control the media unit by pushing in the on/off button on the radio
Wires everywhere:

Re: 1971 Fastback KBY 217K winter 2016 tidy up
The to do list jsut doesn't sem to be getting any smaller. If anything it's getting bigger.
Even the smallest of jobs seems to be taking forever.
So, this last week I decided to make a start on the bodywork. I had noticed a pool of water in the wheel well after picking the car up from having it's suspension.
Although, likely to upset a few Type 3 officainados I've decided to weld the x4 holes up which once allowed the crash beams to pass through.
Holes welded up and smoothed out, ready to paint once the weather gets a bit warmer.
Next bit of body work is fixing up the x2 torsion bar holes in the rear quarters.
