'67 Square continued.....
Hello, I'm the new owner of Justin's 1967 Baltic Blue squareback.

I've owned a few early bay window buses over the last 30 odd years, so I'm used to rusty old RHD aircooled VWs.

The plan is to get it MOT'd and on the road ready for me to take it Belgium in March.
Unfortunately it's been sitting outside in the yard engineless for a couple of years so there's a bit of work required.
Still, I've got two months to sort it.
One of the first jobs was to replace the front screen rubber that was letting water into the interior of the car, and unfortunately undoing some of the previous work.
It's not too bad under the rubber, so after a bit of cleaning up some rust preventer and paint was applied.
Screen refitted with new rubber and a bit of sealer.
The rear wasn't leaking, so I'll keep the new rubber for a later date.

The outer door scrapers have been letting water in as well, and the door sound deadening material has trapped the moisture and rotted the offside door out from the inside.
Fortunately the nearside door hasn't suffered the same fate.
Although both doors have rotted along the bottom inside where the skin meets the frame, so I'm after a pair of decent doors.
A couple of hours scraping the old sound deadening off, a bit of rust preventer and primer were applied. A square of new sound deadening stuck on and a liberal coating of cavity wax to slow down the rot.
While the doors were stripped the window winders were given a once over and the window channels a quick squirt of silicone lube.
The old leaking door rubbers were also removed and new ones fitted.
The nearside wing was removed, the inner arch area cleaned up of old underseal, rubbed back and a coat of paint applied.
The wing appears to be off a later model, so it was modified to take an earlier side marker and seal.
Then a few hours removing the dynamat that had previously been fitted, as this had trapped the water under it and started to rot the floorpan in a few places.
Also exposing a previous repair. I'll bare metal the floorpan and deal with this at the same time as the repairs and installing some proper seatbelt mounting points..

So today I started on the jigsaw that is a type 3 engine and tinware, after cleaning off a large amount of congealed oil and retorquing the loose case nuts.
Frustration set in later as the oil cooler mounting stud threads were damaged, so replacements were fitted and the oil cooler, breather tower and cylinder tinware was installed.
I ran out of suitable fixings for the fan shroud so will leave the reassembly until next weekend when the new bolts, etc will have arrived.

So, engine almost ready to refit. The lack of carb linkage rods may be a bit of an issue though.
I'll give it a tidy up and some proper plug leads when it's running again and the car is mobile.
The sound deadening in the rear was soaking wet and falling apart, so it was removed and binned and the floor and wheel tubs cleaned up with a rotary wire brush.
The engine bay received the same treatment.
And then a coat of Rustoleum rust reformer primer and black top coat for protection.
It was then pushed into the workshop ready for the engine to be fitted tomorrow.
Been a while since the engine bay was occupied. If I get time I'll free the brakes off and see if I can sort the gearchange issues while it's on the ramp.

Engine in and running at last, although not as well as I would like. I'll get some proper plug leads later.
Got a slight gear shift issue as well, the shifter keeps popping out of the shift rod when going into, but mostly changing back out of, reverse.
Seems like there's way too much play at the stick, and it sits a long way over to the nearside as well.
All the bushes are in place and the rear coupler looks OK, any ideas?

Perhaps these will cure the rough running.
No body modifications required to fit apparently.
And the hex bar linkage is junk. I'll cut the ears off the air filter castings to tidy them up when I fit a CSP bellcrank linkage.
A bit of 8mm fuel pipe and a tee, and hopefully it will be back running in a few days.

You may need to seal up the gap in the engine cover to prevent exhaust fumes getting sucked into the interior. I understand that can even happen with a poor tailgate seal, but I've not experienced it myself. I had a leaking heat exchanger in my Beetle years ago which made my wife ill - it was her side. I don't think the Beetle really liked being displaced by her.

After that trip I fell in love with Squarebacks! I did really want Rolands OG paint one that he had at his workshop but couldn't quite afford his asking price!
I have now got a Rhd Australian import which I picked up late last year.
Great Squareback you have there dude.
Hope to catch up at a show this year maybe.

Had a minor issue with the rear brakes, the rear drums awash with brake fluid.
New rear wheel cylinders and shoes sorted that problem.
Got a set of Rivieras from Kinky Mick at a bargain price.

So, it's home at last. MOT'd, taxed and insured.
Got a few perforation issues with the floorpans and lower inner wings, so it was decided to do enough metalwork for the MOT and get to Ninove, and then order a pair of KlassiFab floorpans from C&C to be replaced over the summer/autumn.
It's had it's first wash since I don't know when, a bit of T-Cut and a quick wax. Interior stripped and cleaned using the water that came in after the jetwash.....
Heat exchangers and pipework fitted and then off to JPR Tuning in Yate for a jetting session on the rolling road.
A whopping 58.4 bhp and 85.3 lb/ft, not being able to get more than 2/3 throttle travel didn't help.
Another issue to be sorted.
Next stop Belgium.

Nice, good to see the Square back on the road! Your doing a really good job on her.
I used to own her back in the early 90's. Got her on the road after a few years off sitting around. I did see her in Bristol a couple of years ago.
I do have the nearside floorpan if your interested. When we got the car back on the road the driver's side floorpan was toast so got a set of good floorpans and fitted that side only and kept the passenger one.
I also have one of the chrome sill trims, if your heading to a show at some point will gladly give it to you so you can put it back where it belongs!
Anyhow look forward to the next update,

I'll definitely have the n/s floorpan off you, and any of the other bits you may have there.
The square will be at Bristol Volksfest this year, but I can pick up the floorpan if you message me and let me have your details.

I think I've sorted the oil pressure issues, stuck pressure relief springs seemed to be the culprit.
So today I went for a drive to make sure everything is OK.
Nice Beetle at the garden centre, looks like a daily driver.
One issue I do have though is the nearside door mirror, can't see too much no matter how it's positioned. Will a lhd driver's mirror make any difference?

You have beetle mirrors fitted, type 3 ones are specific to type 3's, they don't have the extending arm.

So the sun came out again today, and I couldn't resist a drive in the square.
Unfortunately I didn't get too far.
The car's not been running right since I've got it really, and it started to misfire and smell of fuel. Finally cut out about 20 minutes from home and wouldn't start. Opened the engine hatch and heard lots of gurgling from the n/s carb, took the air cleaner off to see a fountain of fuel gush out all over the engine.
Great.
Stripped the carb down at the side of the road to find this....
Looks like the float was fitted upside down, no wonder I couldn't get it running right. Reassembled the carb and it started straight away.
Drove home and parked up, looks like the next job is an oil change.
Unfortunately I didn't get too far.

Considering a new 1600 twin carb engine had 65 bhp and a maximum top speed of 84mph, my 1641 with Weber IDF 40s has 58.5bhp and reached a maximum road speed of 62mph.
As one of the chaps at the rolling road said "it seems to be a little tired...."
Oh well, looks like an engine rebuild is added to the list.
I did get them sorted in one way I suppose.
