Gearbox bracket upside down / spacers different ?
I dont really know, but figuring that some daft ideas may trigger something for you

Re: '67 Square continued.....
The bracket can only be fitted one way, and the spacers are exactly as they were fitted previously.
It's really baffling, and so annoying while driving that I've removed the air filters.
I think I'll see if I can get the top and bottom manifold mounting faces machined down.
The car drives wonderfully well though. Just a few niggles to sort like the tracking (front end feels really "loose) and soft brake pedal.

Did you swap in new transmission mounts?

No, everything's the same as before we swapped the transmission back in.

Well, as an experienced guy once said, "if it was working before, and it isn't now, it's something you have done, go back and check your work"
I have found it to be good advice

Re: '67 Square continued.....
Maybe slightly loosen the mounts and space top mount a few mm? If you tightened everything with the motor on a jack maybe its worth a try. As long as you use 10.9 grade fasteners you can add spacers and avoid messing about shortening the manifolds that are super-short as it is...

Re: '67 Square continued.....
I've added some more spacers under the rear engine mount, but still can't work out why the engine is sitting higher than before.
I've had to bend the exhaust tailpipe down a bit to stop it rattling on the rear valance.
At least it's being driven now, although the tailgate is leaking and the battery won't hold a charge.

Re: '67 Square continued.....
Put a fair few miles on the squareback over the last couple of days, and a smile on my face.
Re: '67 Square continued.....
Yes mostly. Brakes are still soft and the starter is playing up, it doesn't seem to be correctly engaging the flywheel even though it's seated correctly.
3rd, 4th and the final drive is massively overgeared for the stock 1600, so it spends a lot of time in 3rd at the moment, but I'm just happy to be putting miles on it.

Nice to see some photos of the car with all 4 wheels on the ground
What ratios are you running ? Standard box with a radically different final drive ?

Standard 1st, 2nd, 1.21 3rd, 0.77 4th, and standard 4.125 final drive, and larger rear tyres.
As soon as I hit any sort of incline it's downshift time.

Re: '67 Square continued.....
You've got a huge gap between 3rd and 4th then.
On standard tyres the ratio has changed from 21.6 to 23.2 mph / 1000 rpm, plus whatever you have done on the tyres.
3rd to 4th on standard tyres the jump is from 13.5 to 23.2 mph / 1000 rpm, against a standard 14.4 >21.6
I forget, have you got a more powerful engine to drop in here ?

Yes, a 2128cc (80 x 92) is currently at the engine builders. Should be good for a reliable 150 lb/ft.
Re: '67 Square continued.....
80x92 sounds like a great torque motor for a squareback - that won't need a downshift

Re: '67 Square continued.....
Enough info there to do some more mathematical guesswork
Engine power 130hp ish
Fairly flat torque curve
Top speed about 115 mph, though you may be banging on the rev limiter there, you've run out of gearing already

Re: '67 Square continued.....
Actually, that's more like what I had in my head before I referred to this
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php? ... 7206&st=60
I assume there's a bit of head work and camshaft changes to get it to rev to those levels ?
If you are on 15" teledials then you I reckon your gearing is about spot on for a top speed of 121 mph. I thought you might be on 205/50/16's
The gearing graph you are using looks very similar to mine, same default colours from Excel 2003 but I don't use gridlines. I also have a separate top speed model, which I have shortcutted by using type 4 aero and dimension values which I have pre populated. Should be reasonably close.

Yes, fully ported and manifold matched Magnum 044 heads, 40mm inlet & 35mm exhaust valves, Engle 120 cam with 1:1.25 rockers.
Compromise between drivability and outright performance as I would like it as a weekend "daily driver".

The mojo is back, for the moment anyway
A wash and polish, although it really needs a machine polish to get the paintwork back.

Re: '67 Square continued.....
Hello chaps.
Got a little issue with the brakes I hope someone can assist with.
The brakes are stopping the car, but the pedal feel is non-existent. Loads of play for the first 2/3 - 3/4 of the travel and then some pressure.
I can adjust the pedal push rod to get the required free play and a pedal at the top of the travel, but after driving for a while the brakes start to come on as the system warms up.
With the push rod adjusted so that the brakes don't bind when warm I can pump the pedal up to get a firm feel, but that disappears after one use of the brakes.
It doesn't inspire any confidence when you press on the pedal and there's nothing until you're almost on the floor.
Any suggestions?
