Best of luck! looks like you've done a good job of tidying up the loose ends. Les hope the MOT man agrees

If You haven't already, make sure You do something with the fan housing outlets-( Remember what happened to Matt singleton when his elbows dropped off en-route to ebi... car spent a week at membury services)
and if You need fresh air pipes under the heads, gimme a yell- I have several spare sets!

I shall go to the ball.
Thanks Peter, I did connect the fan outlets to the heat exchangers, just didn't post a pic.purplepeter wrote: ↑5th March 2018 - 8:43amIf You haven't already, make sure You do something with the fan housing outlets-( Remember what happened to Matt singleton when his elbows dropped off en-route to ebi... car spent a week at membury services)

I think I'll be wearing shorts and a t-shirt unless I fit the heat exchanger cables before Friday.
Just a couple of little jobs to do between now and departure, a good clean inside and out and a 12V socket for phone/sat nav/speedo.

Excellent News!
Now You know why Type 3 drivers always have the windows open!
At least You won't have the problem of arriving with windblown hair.

Re: '67 Square continued.....
A couple of jobs done to make the roadtrip more comfortable.
Heat exchangers now connected to the levers with new cables, and a 12V and usb socket to charge phone, etc.
Cleaned and polished ready for stage one of the trip to Kent on Friday.

Freshly washed & polished for the trip eh. Blue skies and no snow in sight, must be a different planet.
Enjoy the run.

Re: '67 Square continued.....
And it all started so well.
If you're reading this on Sunday you'll realise that things didn't go according to plan, as my return trip wasn't due until tomorrow.
The drive from Bristol to Herne Bay on Friday was issue free. A steady 50-55mph and one fuel stop at Cobham Services on the M25.
Saturday morning's trip from Herne Bay to the Eurotunnel terminal at Folkestone was the same.
But when I arrived at the check-in point, clouds of white smoke billowed from the rear. But the engine sounded fine and revved cleanly.
Well it did until I was being loaded onto the shuttle, the engine locked up and deposited a healthy dollop of oil onto the carriage.
Got to France and was towed off the train and 60 euros lighter after the cleanup.
Had to wait for an almost empty return train and was towed back to England and the services at the tunnel exit.
The AA duly arrived and after 3 relays and almost 12 hours I arrived back home.
Folkestone
Cobham Services West M25
Membury West M4
And home.
Engine rebuild on the cards now, but something a bit bigger than stock I think.
I'll try again next year, 3rd time lucky and all that.

Oh bugger , so sorry to hear that
The white smoke seems unusual on an air cooled engine. Has it totally seized / thrown a rod ?

Oh dear, what a swine. To think all that effort getting the out wagon ready and it throws that at this back at you. Soon you’ll have replaced everything. And it’ll just reward you with many happy years cruising to shows.
Feel for you, I chose to stay at home and gave it a miss this year. Perhaps next year I’ll try make it.

Here here, its a most interesting story to tell! Be interesting to know what cause it to fail, a dragging brake cause it to over heat or something?sparkywig wrote: ↑11th March 2018 - 6:11pmI don't know yet David, I'll start stripping it during the week.937carrera wrote: ↑11th March 2018 - 3:43pmOh bugger , so sorry to hear that

Re: '67 Square continued.....
So, I've managed to get the engine running in the square.
Dropped the plugs out on 3 & 4, squirted a bit of WD40 down into the heads, and after a couple of days, it eventually turned over by hand.
Got it starting on the starter, oil pressure light goes out, but it doesn't sound good, and smells of hot/burnt oil.
I think I may have hit a puddle and it pulled the n/s fresh air hose off the heat exchanger, causing most of the cooling air over 3 & 4 to take the route of least resistance out under the wheel arch.
I have no idea where all the white smoke came from, but the oil level is way over the top mark on the dipstick. Funnily enough it doesn't smell of petrol.
I don't think I'll drop the engine yet as the car is sort of mobile, and it means I can leave it out on the road rather than become a static lump on the drive.
The autopsy can wait until I get another engine ready.
I have been accumulating some engine parts, but have been stitched right up buying a pair of 40 x 35 valve heads off Facebook that are cracked between the valve seats and spark plug hole.
80mm counterweighted VW journal crank
5.4" Unitech rods
90.5mm stroker barrels and pistons

Re: '67 Square continued.....
As the car is sitting all forlorn I've noticed a bit of water ingress through the pop out windows.
So a set of rubbers was ordered from Simon Kelley.
N/S pop out removed, window aperture ready for cleaning.
New rubber on pop out.
What a right pita getting the window back in. Had to rope in a neighbour to help after 2 1/2 hours of struggling with various tapes and implements.
The O/S can wait for a few days now it's started raining...

Re: '67 Square continued.....
Going to build a complete spare engine, rather than salvage parts from the current one? The heads are repairable but you need to know the right welding men. Not many folk are interesting in trying as its so hard to do.
I assume your heater pipes were just an interference fit? They should have hose clips around each end to stop that sort of thing from happening. Part number is 211 255 463 though i bet they arent about any more. A 62-87mm jubilee clip with do the job
