I've decided to run the car through the summer, and then attack the (ever increasing) list of jobs in the autumn.
But one job I need to do is remove the added starter button which has failed, and replace the faulty ignition switch which is the reason the starter button was fitted.
I wish I never started.
I'm now at this stage.

And to cap it all, the replacement switch is the wrong one. I do wish parts suppliers would sort out themselves out when it comes to Type 3 parts.

Many thanks must go to Simon Kelley (notch1500) who stripped and repaired the ignition block.

And after sorting through the jumble of cables behind the dash, with the help of this,

the squareback now starts from the key, the high beam wiring is inside the steering column cowl, the clock works and the dash lights come on. And I fitted a wiring cover cap.

Starting to make slight progress. :)

My next task is how to fit these buggers?

The longer end goes towards the rear, and the Y-outlets go to the heater pipe (part of the inner sill) and the outlet on the rear kick-plate. They are slightly compressible with the corrugations, and are designed to hold themselves in place once they expand again. Put the rear end in first, push it back until the front outlets fit in the pipes.
I've never needed to do much to pop them out, or put them back, but plastic stiffens with age. It might be worth borrowing a hair dryer to make them a bit more pliable. I wouldn't try a heat gun or you might melt something.

OK, thanks Dave. I'll have another go on Sunday.

So today, between the heavy showers, a couple of other jobs were undertaken.
New black wing beading to replace the white.

And a length of 7 core cable was pulled in alongside the loom from the engine bay to the dash.

Yes, a towbar is waiting in the lockup to be fitted as well, Peter. That's for the Eriba Pan when I get that finished....
The cable was pulled in for any additional supplies I might need. For instance, like what the plastic duct was used for.

Then I had a pleasant hour or so cruising around in the sunshine.
I think I may convert the side marker lights to repeater indicators, at least they might make me more visible to drivers not paying much attention to their surroundings.

Looks like the tachometer is from a series 2 924 turbo........ and you definitely need to get that redline changed :)

Glad the membership is sorted now. I've never seen a club tax disc holder. Very smart. You can get repro discs with the year of your car, though I guess the first tax disc would usually have expired 12 mths later.

It's out of a 1985 944, and the redline will be fine for my plans. :)

You're probably right on the tax lengths. I'll have to look out some of mine for the Beetle back in the '60s. I think I tended to tax 4-monthly, being just a poor student back then!

Went for a another drive today and eventually ended up at a friend's workshop.
I say eventually.
The car completely died heading down the long hill from Failand towards Wraxall, no power, no lights.
I had no tools on board so hoped it was a quick fix, and it turned out to be quite painless in the end. The main feed to the fuseboard had disconnected itself. Managed to reconnect the spade terminal and everything came back on. I'll need to sort the connection next weekend.
Anyway, Janek's got a few cool vehicles at his shop, so as a photo opportunity is never refused, he dragged a couple out.

Drove home through a torrential downpour, ended up with wet feet and a sodden glovebox. May have to drop the airbox and see if that's where the water's getting in.

Such a shame that the "official" club pitch had one Type 3 and about 6 modern watercooled cars on it.

Unfortunately they turned up with one notch and 5 Mk V/VI Golfs and had to go into Club Camping.


Haven't really done a lot to the square over the last few months.
It did have a wash ready for the Berkeley VW Show though.

Only saw one other type 3 there, Larry's notch, and one type 34.
Lots of T4 and T5s though.....


I'm amassing parts for the work that needs to be done over the Autumn and Winter.
Even picked up a nearside floorpan from one of the car's previous owners. They bought a pair years ago, but only replaced the offside.

Yes, stripped, jet washed, wire brushed and primed.
Needs a small hole welding by the steering box mount, but other than that in remarkably good condition for a 50 year old beam.

A coat of black after the repair, and then hopefully fitting it this weekend.

Oh I thought you were stripping it, or have you had the arms and bars out already? Always worth a clean and regrease while you've got in off the car and worth removing the grease nipples and making sure they aren't blocked. Especially with such a solid beam.

Time is moving on, and other than a quick couple of laps around the block not a lot has happened to the square over the last few months.
I picked an engine and IRS gearbox up fairly cheaply from a well known auction site earlier in the year, mainly for the nosecone to sort my gearshift issues.
So I thought I'd start stripping the engine for a winter rebuild.
As you can see, it's been sitting around for a while.

Pulley nut and fan pulley took a bit of effort to come off. And after much persuading with penetrating fluid and a couple of filling knives, I managed to split the fan housing.
But the fan itself isn't giving up without a real fight....

Because it's becoming a right mare last Saturday evening I drove to St. Austell and back to collect this.

I think I need to start fitting bits, rather than accumulating parts. It might make some room in the garage.
