Noise when turning left means right hand side to be checked .With the car having being stood for a long time it's possible the grease has dried out

So today i greased up the front beam, all four nipples

I’ve also taken her out for 25 miles, she actually drives really well! I need to get a pro to set up the carbs 100%, but atleast it’s mobile at last.

I haven’t had time to look at the noise today properly, it only happens on hard left turns. It definitely sounds like disc, backing plate or bearing. As the discs are so pitted and need replacing anyway, i’ll tackle this when i change the discs over

I think that just confirms Broadys diagnosis, if they are like the type 4 it's a 15minute job

wheel bearings need adjustment. theyre look loose which lets the disc wander about and its hitting the caliper is my guess.

How are you getting on? Did the fuel cut offs make ant difference? Did you have any joy adjusting the wheel bearings? Its a nuce easy job, the only fiddle is popping the clip off the speedo cable

I haven't had a chance to deal with the bearings or connect the fuel cut off solenoids as of yet as i've been busy with getting things organised for my Grandad's funeral and also revising towards taking an exam as part of my job. To top it off my daily mk4 golf went into limp mode and kept cutting out so any spare time i've had has been spent on getting that sorted. i replaced the crankshaft position sensor and serviced it after reading the fault codes and i think that's back on the road so we should have plenty of spare time coming up for the Type 3!

I have however taken her out a couple of times, and she's running nicely. I still need the carbs setup professionally though as either the fuel gauge is dodgy or it drinks petrol like a fish!

I'd like to get the front and rear wings off to inspect for rust behind them. Does anyone know how to go about this? i'm assuming they're just bolted into place but i'd just like pointers in case there are any hidden bolts etc

thanks all

Ah yes of course. Car is very much second piority. Have you set the carbs up as per the little booklet sent over earlier in the thread? Whats making you think they need more set up work?

Have you managed to spend any more time getting the type 3 sorted, or are you still in the midst of exams and other personal matters ?

hey guys,

it's been a while since i was last online. Let's just say there was an issue with the fasty's fuel tank and my drive way and i'm now a few grand lighter...

any way, at the weekend i decided i'd start lining up jobs that i knew would need looking into for the future. I took the rear passengers wing off to discover a couple of rust holes. I knew these were there, just not the severity. I can't weld so i'll be needing to get someone to tackle this over the winter. I also swapped the wing over for another one that i got with the car which is slightly better nick.

I've also got a parts list on the go, so if anyone can help with the following i'd be interested-
71 indicator stalk
late rear wings
late front wings
door and windows seals

the rubber parts i'm probably going to try and buy NOS or aftermarket, unless anyone has any decent ones sitting about.

For now i'm just using as it is, until i get the finances together to get the rust sorted i'm a little stuck for progress.

Nice to see the car getting some love after what it did!

That's all the normal rot it would see. I expect you can add a pair of full length sills to your shopping list.

Seal wise ive got this lot for sale. There are some which will be of use to you.

Thanks man. Potentially got some bits lined up from Danny Lord so if that goes through that’ll be this months spending money gone.

I’ll definitely be in touch with you next month though about those seals.

Lining up rust removal and body work/panels to be done over the winter so going to have to start saving up as unfortunately i can’t weld and equally have nowhere to even attempt it.
I’ve also found there’s a bloke that does sand blasting a couple of minutes away from me so i’m probably going to take all the bolt on/off panels to him to be blasted to see what metal is left 😂

So i decided to try and make the most of the sunshine over the weekend and to also start looking for the rust. Not something i’d been looking forward too but something that needed doing.
In prep for the rust repair over the winter, i also stripped out the rear of the interior (not that there’s much to it) and removed the drivers front wing and gave it a wire brush before the heat got the better of me.

PS - i found Wally 😆

On the plus side, beyond a bit of surface rust the battery tray area of the floor pan is pretty mint

Rust areas look the same as what I had hidden under all the outer panels etc of my car. You may find that under the battery tray sound deadening that it may be a bit worse.
Unfortunately there aren't many reproduction panels for these. I bought brand new sills and heater channels, and made all the other metal panels myself.
Here's a couple of sites I used:
https://www.werk34.de
https://www.csp-shop.com/en/
Vwheritage and machine7

Danny Lord and Simon may have some salvageable panels too

How are you getting on? Have you had chance to get stuck any further in and see what youve really got? Are you planning to get the body off?

Hi guys,

Just a little update. Not much has happened with the fastback since my last post. I’ve been working most hours to save up some extra cash for some welding.
I now have a reasonable chunk of £’s so it’s going off next week for the welding to begin, we’ll see how far that gets me. From what i can see it needs the front and rear arches sorting, some rot in the c pillars, most likely the sills and whatever else comes up. I don’t have the cash to get all the welding done at once, but i thought getting some of it done over the winter is better than nothing.

On top of that i’ve been trying to strategise how best to do other bits alongside the welding. Nothing too costly or fancy, but to make it a bit better to drive as it doesn’t feel the safest to drive.
Plans are this-
1) new shocks and lower all round by 1 or 2 splines. (Check balljoints and bushes and replace if/as needed)
2) new steering damper and front brake discs as mine are horrendously pitted and the steering is wallowy
3) new bushes for the gear selector. Seem to be relatively cheap and easy to do
4) dress up the engine bay and paint tinware. Again, not expensive and will make it look/feel like progress is being made

I don’t have a unit/garage i can work in so progress is likely to be slow. This is more a guide for me so i can purchase the relevant parts over winter and stock pile for spring 😀

I’ll probably be going to Slough swap meet so will be keeping an eye out for any bits there

Current aim is to get the car running and driving nicely and safely. To get the car mint in and out is obviously going to take some serious time and money but thought i’d set myself some sensible goals on the meantime to help progress the build

Just following up from my last post, i dropped the fasty off today for the welding to be started. Drove it for the first time since late August and although it was a noisy, creaky, wet drive, it still put a smile on my face.

Can’t wait to see how much gets sorted over the coming weeks, hopefully nothing too sinister surfaces

Thats some good tragets, Looking forward to see the progress. Othe than when they were new, there has probably never been a better time to restore a type 3!

So time for an update -

The majority of the welding has been done on the fastback, there’s some left to do in the spare wheel well and a bit in on of the front arches but other then that she’s now solid.
I have boxes of parts, shocks, heater cables, steering damper, various seals and other small bits all stacked up ready to fit.

Hopefully i can make some good progress once i pick it up at the weekend, the only battle now is the lack of daylight

Picked up the fasty on sunday, in typical old car fashion the rear lights now aren’t working and it’s blowing fuses. It’s probably a bad earth or crossed wire from where the wings have been off tje rear but i’ll look into it this coming weekend.
I junped straight into it and ran new heater cables. Wallah - we now have nice, luke warm heating!

Luke warm heating? Then you need to go over teh whole system. The heating in a type 3 is fantastic. I suspect youre missing some tubes as is pretty common these days. As 937 says, those lights are good a cheap. For an extra fiver you can get and LED version from screwfix which uses a fraction of the electricity but doesnt give out the heat.

Ive a fair suspision that you are at the very least missing item 30

Have you got a stock exhaust fitted?

Oh and wow, that welding was done quickly!!
