Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
So it’s been a while since i was last on here...
I made some good progress at the start of lock down, including lowering the front end, and new discs/bearings. Lowering it became an absolute ballache as i snapped the bolt for the lower ball joint in the spindle and got the right arse.
Progress has halted since then, as i’ve been saving to move house and i’m hopefully going to have a garage at home then so progress will be far better!
Lots of parts floating about to fit, just need to get around to it.
Oh and a retrosound stereo came up cheap near me, so i bought that and wired it in, not that i have any speakers in there yet

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
I’ve also replaced all of the gear selector bushes, you can see there wasn’t an awful lot left....
Cleaned up inside the boot a bit, and also cleaned up the original headliner with a damp cloth. There are a couple of small stains but no tears so overall i’m really happy with it.
Then i went on the hunt for rust and found this gaping chasm!

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
I think we have all seen that type pf rust in our fasties.
Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
The outter most part of this is a stengthener to improve the front end structure in a crash. Unfortunately if it isnt cleaned out and inhibited regularly they all do this. My car no longer has them fitted for that reason. Best bet is to drill out the remaing spot welds and then just repair the inner wing underneath. It will save time and money.

So it’s been a while, but yesterday this happened...
Plan is to replace the seals and gaskets, tart it up a bit, new clutch and back in she goes.

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
Good work, theres a few improvments you need to make there.
You are missing the rear air filter support. The balance pipe arrangement is all worng. You need a pair of the 2 into 1 peices and then you should have 1 balance pipe. A per the attached. Item 14
The oil cooler needs new sealing foam too. Are the cool air take offs on the elbows blanked off? if not they need doing as well.
Show us photos as you go an we can help you improve upon what you have

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
thanks mate! god knows where i'll get those balance pipe parts from! I have the elbows, trying to get hold of new clamps for the rubber. I want heating so it'll all be going back on, no J tubes for me.
Will get a few snaps, need to replace rear main seal as the bell housing is full of oil and the clutch is getting done as that's seen better days!
I plan to change all of the seals/gaskets, give it a lick of paint and replace/fix anything missing or broken.

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
I'm sure plenty of people will have them. I may have some kicking about. I can see you have the elbows. But they have a small take off point in them. It's important that is blanked off. Unless you are restoring the full system back to be spec, you'll need to get hole of the pipes which fit the tinware and some correct diameter card tube as well. I'll get the diagram in the morning

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
Oh yes i have those pipes, i’m in the process of finding some suitable piping. I see ISP west do it but don’t have stock, looking elsewhere for suitable options.
If you do have those bits for the balance pipes let me know

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
Some more progress on the engine today.
The heat exchangers are rotten, and the oil breather was chock full off nasty, crusty old oil!

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
Sounds like a nomral rebuild to me These old busses didnt get a lot of care in the 90s and early 2000s. The best way to clean the breather out itself is to jsut wash it through with dissel a few times.
Keep up the good work.

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
Bit more progress. Engine is largely back together with new gaskets and seals.
Currently on the hunt for heat exchangers as mine were rotten. Once they’re bought i can fit them and the exhaust, then i can move onto doing the rear main seal, and fitting the new clutch and flywheel and back in she goes

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
Loads of progress but lacking photos!
The engine's had all of the gaskets and seals replaced, along with a new clutch, pressure plate and flywheel and clutch cable.
It's back in, i just need the time to get the timing set up, and can then get the carbs running a bit better!
I also found that both the front earths on the headlights were heavily corroded, so i've replaced those, and also re-wired the front headlights and indicators to tidy it all up, for the first time since owning the car i now have all of my exterior lights functioning correctly, including reverse lights! (ended up buying two reverse switches as the first i received was a dud).
Then over a couple of evenings i stripped down my driver's seat and added some more of the sisal material to bulk it out and support my arse some more.
More to come, but it's starting to look like it can soon become a drivable rolling resto

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
So i haven't been particularly hot on updating this thread as of late, but plenty more progress has been had.
The engine is now in and running (still need someone to correctly set it up for me) and had both carbs rebuilt, followed by an oil cooler that blew up and dumped it's guts all over my freshly cleaned engine!
I've also lowered the rear end two outer splines. As cool as it looks, just sitting on the back of the car causes it to bottom out so i need to rethink my plans....I've been looking at a look of charts for the torsion bars.
New tyres all round with a lower profile to clear the inner arches.
All panels have come off to be sanded to remove the flaky paint and worst of the rust, and then a coat of lacquer has been applied to seal it all.
Brakes are awful though, not sure if the master cylinder is toast, as it has had all new calipers, discs, pads, shoes and rear wheel cylinders and hours of bleeding

Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
My brakes took hours of bleeding to get a decent pedal, they're perfect now.
Re: 71 Fast Back Recommissioning
Getting on very nicely! Have you got the rear brakes properly adjusted? If you havent the brake pedal will feel terrible.
Not to teach you to suck eggs. (who sucks eggs?) Wined all 4 shoes up to the drum. Not jammed against solid, but when they against. you will feel the adjuster get harder to turn, dont force it. Once all 4 are wond up. Back them all off 2 clicks, then operate the pedal and hand brake several times, spin the rear wheels by hand and listen for any brake binding. If there is, wind them back 1 more click, operate the brakes again, then spin the wheels and listen. And repeat until you have freely rotating wheels.
Usually 3 to 4 clicks backed off is where they should sit.
