1967 VW Variant
1967 VW Variant
THe origin can be found here viewtopic.php?f=1&t=14816
I was lucky enough to be in the right place, right time, and with the right money,
to become the new custodian of this piece of original un molested german metal,
It has not seen outside its resting place since 1970 when it was parked up there.
Rubbers on steering trackrod ends, look like new.
Now bad for 53 years old.
Its in better shape than the fasty I am finishing at the moment.

Re: 1967 VW Variant
There is no place at all on the floor pan that needs any repairs.
The only welding required is in the area of the bumper mounts, front and rear.
And a little low down on the front clip.
Thats is, job done.
There is absolutely no need to split the shell from the pan.
This is an amazing barnfind, best in the country.

This area rarely survives through the years.
My own white fastback did not have a trace of this flap or surrounding metal.
Yet on this 53 year old car, its intact and serviceable, with the rubber seal.
And the valve settings are the recommended 4 thou, and heads are clean
looking.
Here is a good view of the flap just mentioned.

In this picture of the inner wing at the rear on the drivers side,
you can clearly see the inner wing seal that is intact, and still sealing the wing area as it
is meant to. Strangely enough its supple and strong even after all these years.

Re: 1967 VW Variant
Great to see! Looks like it just needs a good pressure wash!
Re: 1967 VW Variant
Interesting to see the caphead bolts in the calipers. Ive never seen that before. and I like it!
Looking at photos a bit futher down, the exhaust looks to be missing a clamp. But a very sold car, get it cleaned and a fresh coat of dinitrol on and youre golden!kaddy wrote:

I have 2 NOS exhausts to fit this baby no problem.
THis is definitely a keeper. It starts quicker than my other fasty.
Just have to clean out all the crap from the seats, and check the brakes and steering,
and away we go.

Re: 1967 VW Variant
Nothing going on at the moment, I am just recovering from a heart attack. No major damage as I got to hospital before anything kicked in.
Just needed a couple of stents, and I am well on the road to recovery. Back cycling 6kms a day now, so its all good. Stents are like a couple of helicoils
Just tidying up a couple of bits on the white fasty, then i will be rolling in the variant for some work.

glad you're on the mend Kaddy - must have been a shock - the car looks like a survivor that hasn't been messed with -
The variant Project
Re: 1967 VW Variant
Something like meself
Thanks I am well on the mend. I knew it was coming on the day. Chest felt different but no pain. Doc said I was very smart moving when I did because most dont until they are unconcious. I am further down the road of recovery than the variant, but I plan to change that very soon. Just as soon as the discs are on the fastback.
Re: 1967 VW Variant
I think it was on the cards, as I have family history for dicky tickers. But cardiac surgeon who did the stents said my heart was 100% and no muscle death
associated with it. If there was it cant be repaired once its deprived of oxygen for more than a few minutes. And a heart echo confirmed that the pump
was 100%, but the fuel lines were clogged. So as i say a few helicoils (stents) were fitted, and i have to go back for 2 more, and the jobs a good un.
Back to 6k cycling a day 2 weeks after being let out of hospital. So its all great.
Re: 1967 VW Variant
I managed to undo the bodge on the cooling flaps that were jammed open. I sorted all the parts from my stash, including a thermostat from a 1600 type 2 engine that I had. I checked it over and its working perfectly. The only part that I did not have was the horizontal rod from the flap to the rotating linkage thats operated by the thermostat.
So I made that from a carburetor rod that I had spares of. All done, and tested a few times to make sure it opened and closed freely. And the jobs a good un.
I also did a top end rebuild . I fitted new rings, and balanced all the pistons to within .5 of a gram. One piston was 6 grams heavier than the rest.
Cross hatch honed the barrels to aid the bedding in of the rings.
No reason why a little old heart attack should stop me from having fun.

I manged to get my engine re assembled and fitted the start up kit on the engine stand. Carbs cleaned and timing and valves all set on the engine.
10 minute cold crank to get the oil pressure up. Fingers crossed, and chocks away....

Re: 1967 VW Variant
Good work that man, but a 10 minute crank!? That poor starter.

Re: 1967 VW Variant
Agh Broady.....I.m not that cruel
I meant during intervals, a total reasonable cranking to get the oil around the engine.
Its been a while since my last visit, but between a new kitchen I made for the cook, and a boiler replacement, classics have been on the back burner.
Never fear, I got back to them about 2 months ago.......rust removal, and metal replacement, as per usual for type 3's.
I originally thought this type 3 variant was in very good shape, sadly it wasn't, which meant loads, and loads of work. I had to remove all the front clip, inner front clip, and both wheelhouse bulkheads. Too rusty, and if in doubt, cut it out. Which is what i did.Of course bulkhead panels are either not available, or cost more than the wifes kidneys, so I had to make both bulkhead panels left and right.

And once the left side was done, I moved over to the right, and rinse repeat, hey presto. These are some pics taken during the process.
