The barons restoration. 1970 fasty.
I went to get parts today but had to order them so they should be in tomorrow.
GS&F only list one pressure relief valve so what you betting its the wrong one?
I will also collect different oil and change kits tomorrow.
As this is a pretty boring update I thought I would share what is quite possibly the weirdest paragraph I have ever seen in a haynes manual;
Now I just removed and fitted the oil cooler with the engine in the car so who the hell is coming to take me away???
Keep your fingers crossed that the plunger I pick up tomorrow is the right one and I will let you know if it cures things.
Dave.

i've done mine in situ before . a bit fiddly and a lot of stripping down but not impossible.
it's an early case with 8mm oil ways yes? Not the best basis for an engine rebuild as i found out! they changed to 10mm oilways and dual relief for a reason You have matched the correct oil pump , cooler and seals? A low tick over could bring the oil light on at tickover. 10/40 oil maybe too thin. Try a 20/50 and at a last resort....

Im suffering another mojo failure again tonight. I was half way through removing the engine again when the thunder started.
Oil pressure is getting worse, even though I fitted a bugpack oil pressure booster kit and changed the oil so there must be a bigger problem.
Tomorrow I will be fitting the old engine with the new exhaust and getting it in the car as I think the new engine will be stripped right back to see whats going on inside the case.
I am considering buying a new case and crank from GS&F and attempting to get it together for Biggar in 2 weeks but I will need to price it up and see if I can afford it.
On the plus side I got a call from Karmann Konnection yesterday to tell me the bumpers I was told would take 3 weeks will be here Monday......11 weeks later.

I have admitted defeat, the old engine is back in the car for just now until I can investigate what is causing the low oil pressure.
I did however swap the exhaust onto the old engine, couldnt leave that sitting in a box after hearing how nice it sounded.

I got the old engine back in yesterday, it started first time and sounds sweet so maybe I should have been happy with what I had (even if it was loosing power on 2 cylinders).
My bumpers arrived this morning and with the money I spent on them I was hoping for better but its too late to return them now as I need them on for the show.
Painted the backs of them this afternoon and taped on the black stripe through the middle so hope to have them fitted tomorrow.

Bumpers are on and looking good, I still have some issues with the quality but I will deal with that after the Scottish VW show at Biggar in 2 weeks.

Not had an update for a while but things are still happening, just a lot slower than they were.
As the old engine is back in and running I have been driving and enjoying the car while its sunny and its going great. I am still going to change the engine as having covered 116000 miles and with compression down on 2 cylinders its time for a change but for now its still going.
So I got the flywheel off today and I can now continue with the tear down.
I have sent off an e-mail to Karmann Konnection regarding the bumpers so Im awaiting a response. As there is now signs of rust after being on the car for 4 weeks, the pitting and the twist you can guess Im really unhappy with the bumpers.
On the Sunday morning at the Scottish VW owners show in Biggar I met up with a writer, Bob Weir who took a few pics for an article he is writing, one of these appeared in the motoring section of the Scotsman 2 weeks ago and readers were asked to guess what the car was. Last Friday the correct answers were printed;
The reporter also took this great picture of my car;
More updates soon,
Dave.

Great pic. That looks like the ford at the play park at Bigger. Many years ago I remember my brother soaking about 20 children paddling in the stream near by when he shot through in an old Ford Escort.
Were you at Volksfling? I saw it was on when I drove through Biggar on the way to Kirroughtree to go cycling. I was going to pop in on my way back to have a look but by that time it was pretty much all wrapped up.

I got a bit of time to spend on it yesterday to try and figure out what the problem is with the engine.
I stripped it down and noticed 3 possibilities.
1, one of the cam bearings had moved slightly (allthough this may have happened as I split the case).
2, from inside I can see that the anular groove on the pressure switch is showing.
No Idea if this is normal yet so will investigate.
And
3, the biggest possibility for causing the low oil pressure. The outlet and inles on the oil pump dont seem to line up with the outlet and inlet on the crank case;
I didnt know this could be a problem until I started looking into pressure problems but its not looking good for this case being usable.
At least the crank and cam seem to have sustained no damage so will be re-usable.

Not many updates recently as I have been using and enjoying my car in the little bit of summer we have left.
Things are still happening however.
I have just returned from Cumbernauld with my second set of shiny new bumpers;
The guys were really knowlageable and took a lot of time getting them right so highly recomended.
I have also sorted out a refund with Karmann Konnection so should be able to start collecting parts for attempt 2 on the engine.
Dave.

Been a while so time to add an update.
Finally after 2 1/2 years searching I now have a full set of NOS type 3 over riders
The first set I bought cost a lot and came from America but when they got here were not type 3 over riders.
The second set cost not as much and came from Germany but again, were not type 3 but late Beetle so just about fitted and thats what are on the car just now.
The newest set have come all the way from Canada and are Type 3, NOS and in great condition
Got them from a very helpfull chap at Germansupply.com in Toronto.
Wish I could go and fit them but will need to wait 'till my wrist is fixed (broke it 2 weeks ago).
Dave.
P.S. If anybody wants to buy a very good set of late beetle over riders get in touch.

Im really glad you enjoyed the thread mate.
I wont be at Volksworld Im affraid. Due to being about 8 hours away its a bit of a trek.
I am thinking about throwing it on my tow truck and heading down to Action but not decided yet.
I just started a car delivery service so I used my T4 transporter to take my fasty back to the paint shop a couple of days ago;
I managed to run over something on the motorway and the front tyre threw it up into the underside of the wing causing a dent and cracking the paint so its in getting that fixed.
Once its back and my broken wrist heals I will be starting on a new engine and getting the over riders fitted.

No way, thats a nightmare. Hows the pillar and the sill and is it getting fixed?
One of the reasons I picked up a Vento for the winter was being paranoid about somebody else hitting me.
Hope it all gets sorted out and see if you can get the car de-magnetised so it dosnt happen again.

Nice sunny day so I decided to try something.
I bought a set of Type 3 side stripes long before the car got painted but never got round to sticking them on before paint and was too scared to do it after paint.
Today I got brave. The car went from looking like this;
To this;
Not fully convinced yet but I think they are growing on me.
