project 72 fastty
Re: project 72 fastty
heres a few more pics.
other tub in place still needs to be welded but got a lot done this weekend.going to see if i can convert it to a stearing rack.more soon.

Re: project 72 fastty
nice project chap n really like the no hold bars approach !:) is the front end still gunna b strong enough now the box section is cut out n replaced with the tubs??
Re: project 72 fastty
the front end is exactly how it was with all the strengthening its just got the wheel tubs in.got the other wheel tub welded in and put the front susspension back on along with the wheels, it looks the bollox.
see what you think.
bit more welding to finnish front, but i still need an early fuel tank with the filler neck at the front.more soon.

yes i agree it looks the bollox dude
we dont stop playing because we get old.... we get old because we stop playing
Re: project 72 fastty
got most of the welding done today.
and now theres plenty of clearance for the wheels.
also got the one peice door windows, brand new still in the box with all the seals.
and heres the colour i have picked.

Re: project 72 fastty
keep getting little bits done so it,s moving forward.
the wings i have are odd, the front indicator holes are differant, hence the patch.
bonnet all so sorted.
and the other tub completely welded in.
been trying to sort the steering today, needs a bit of modding but the original steering box will fit back on. the only bit that is going to need serious modding is the fuel tank.
more to come.

Re: project 72 fastty
Now i dont know if this is how you have managed to narrow the torsion bars and this may be a way to do it but have not measured but i was down at my workshop today where i have my fastback and also my porsche 914 in bits and i looked at the length of the torsion bar from the 914 and it looks like a good fit for a narrow type 3 beam!!!
Not measured length or spline size/pitch but may be worth looking into for future mods!
Oh and i have a few spare pairs of porsche 914 torsion bars.

Re: project 72 fastty
914 torsion bars, never thought of that.i have narrowed the type3 ones, im not sure if its going to work this way thats why i have not posted how i have done it yet.i have spoke to people who make springs and they say they cant see why it wont work. would rather test it first.besides the torsion bars running a narrowed type3 beam is a lot of work i am now realizing why i havant seen any one else do it.but it will be cool IF it works.
i like the idea of the 914 torsion bars

Re: project 72 fastty
I can only think of cutting the end splines off, and drilling for an interference fit on the shortened bar. I don't know how you could be sure the spline ring wouldn't simply split in use, or rotate, but modern welding tricks never cease to amaze me.
Dave.
Re: project 72 fastty
As i say not sure at all if the 914 torsion bars would work but i was just curious if the length looked approx right if the beam was narrowed so would need to see if the splines were the same. Being typically german they probably are the same. I will check sometime if they are and report back.
There are many ways to shorten a torsion bar and a few good machine shops that can do it but its the costs involved.

Re: project 72 fastty
if they fit i think the 914 torsion bars would be the way to go.i am very lucky to work somewhere were i can get all sorts off welding and fabrication done (i try to do most of it myself but there is always someone who knows more and who is willing to help).with guidance we came up with an easy way to modify the type3 torsion bars,.wether it works only time will tell. i have a load more pics of how i did it which i will post when i know it works.
going to try and get it reassembled over the next couple of days so i can see how it looks back on all four wheels. got to order some steering joints and theres still the floor pans to do but i think the bulk of the welding is now done.
more pics in a few days

Ouch!
Impressive amount of work.
I'd worry about aquaplaning and speed humps - or even manhole covers - with it so low and with such wide tyres. I assume you're modding it for drag-racing or something?

Re: project 72 fastty
dan,
i think the wheels are called: speed .i dont think you can get them anymore as the mag i got them out of were selling off the last few sets awhile ago.
nope its not a drag car, its just for plain old driving about in.at the moment its dropped to the max but this is were the raised beam now comes into play as i can now raise it a couple of splines and still have a low car without the beam whacking the floor (( if you notice thats a 4 spline drop on the front and the beam is still 2" off the floor) so over all it should ride better than most type3,s which are slammed.as for the fat tyres i just like the look of the big arse rims and the low fat rubber, it just looks

yep the door handles are mx5 with the lock bit cut off.
reckon i could get it lower if i fitted 13" rims,
