Here is my 67 squareback which i shipped in from California late last year. Being a genuine black plate claifornian car it's completely rock solid , never welded and It's still wearing it's original paint. It's had no paintwork done anywhere. The original red interior is still in great condition and the spare wheel still has the original crossply tyre.
This is it straight off the boat...
loaded up and ready to roll
the arty shot
The interior before i cleaned it
nice window sticker
I thought i would keep it as stock as possible for Stanford Hall before i get to work on it
It appears the judge didn't like the fact that the paint was all original and polished through to the primer in places. Perhaps i should straighten every dent, repaint it and lose all it's character? NOT A CHANCE!

I wish I'd looked more carefully at the car now, rather than just the curious paint effect - almost looked like marbling.
As far as the judging is concerned, the guy doing it has been showing his Texas yellow 412 for about 20 years and winning lots of trophies from other judges, so I think he was only doing what judges have to do.
It's hard to take that step from original but imperfect to refurbishment, and only you can decide when and how much you do to put right the shortcomings. In a way, it isn't original paint when it wears through - the inspectors wouldn't have passed it in the factory like that!
If you do decide to have a repaint of the bonnet and wings, I suggest you avoid having a bare metal job. Make use of the original primer and rust-proofing layers and work from there.

Hi nidge
I love your car i passad you on the a14 never paint it original cars like these are rare any one can have a car restored with anough money but it will always be a restored car and not original.I have the same problem of a original paint car which has a few rust spots and dents but i dont want to paint it as it will loose its apeal and become just anouther nice restored car.Dont get me wrong i like show cars i have done it myself but never have the same appeal as a car with its history still on display.Keep it as is as i would love to own it
Cheers

i'm not taking it out on the judge far from it.( His 412 is amazing.). He has to work within the peramaters given. With my car you either get it or you don't. Mr panalvan has hit the nail on the head. I only put in the concourse as I just wanted as many people to see the car as possible. All the comments i got were good so i'm happy.

Your Squareback is one fine driver.
With the exception of the arms rest, dashboard, carpet, streering wheel and column, it really looks like a pigalle interior.

Nope - a Beetle engine has a mid-seal that stops the cooling air mixing with the warmed-up waste air. Plus it sticks up into the boot area in the car.
You can modify it - basically you need a means of checking the oil level, different oil-cooler mounting studs, the Type 3 flat oil cooler, means to mount the rear fan housing, a rear cross-bar engine support, Type 3 exhaust system or a version to work with a Type 3. I may have left the odd thing out.
Fundamentally the engine is the same as a 1600 Beetle one, but some of the fittings on it are not.

back on topic thanks
look what i got
For those who have never seen a set before these are Huls camping hinges
I've only seen 1 set fitted to a car and that was in Vegas a couple of years ago. If there's another set in the Uk i would be surprised. Anyhow they fit in place of the original rear seat hinge and allow the seat base to move forward and sit in the stock position or horizontal allowing 7ft of flat load area ideal for sleeping!! Here's a trial fit. More pics when fitted later

Registering your Square is easy mate. I would advise that you get the appropriate forms from the DVLA now, then you've got them. To register, you will need mot, insurance cover note ( issued using the vin number ), and most importantly proof of the age of the Square, either Aussie registration documents which must clearly show date of manufacture or a birth certificate from VW.variant wrote:Just a quick question Nidge.
My squareback is due to arrive in about a month from Australia. Was it a hassle to get yours registered? As far as I can see I need to get an MOT and fill some forms for the DVLA. Is that about it?
I think the forms are V55/5, please dont quote me on that. You can order them online from the DVLA website. Hope that all makes sense.
Pulled the engine out at the weekend as there was severe juddering when taking up drive on a hill or when towing. This is what i found...
Someone had fitted HD clips on the release bearing but 1 had come off and was laying in the bellhousing. Also the gearbox mounts are perished and need replacing. time to clean up and a visit to GSF me thinks

True
It's been in hibernation since Sept but I'm planning on getting it to Stanford Hall.
All going well it should be featured in a well known non VW magazine next month
