1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Ah that's a bugger. Reviews have been good. And after 7 days its fully cured. It's overpaintable with all sorts of stuff. The data sheet is very good and the YouTube videos handy.
I would recommend it. You can even lay it over light rust

The other product wasn't Upol. Anyway, I've asked for views, lets see what people come back with, as you say, I think they'll be pretty similar. There are many more T25 rebuilds, as many more were sold, and they rust just as well.

Yeah my last comments were referring to upol. I cant comment on the other product as I've never used it

All them years ago. Shame I ddint know at the time. The weekend was a haze of sunshine and beer. I remember seeing lots of amazing cars, great drag racing and the trade section had a few nice bargains

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Lets have a bit more then. I had a bright idea that I should have my rear wings blasted and then put them in this epoxy too. During the hot sunny weekend I laid them in the sun and let the waxoyl heat up. It was much easier to wipe off. Then I dropped them off of blasting. They have come out very well. One tiny crack was there, the rest of them is completely solid.
Hard to tell, but after its got some epoxy on.
And while I was heading that way, I dropped these few bits off.
I have previously used a water based stone chip on a few areas on the car, this is amazing stuff as it doesn't react with other paint. But I had no means of inhibiting rust. So I decided to lift some and see what condition the metal was in. Its been about 6 years under there.
It really wasn't too bad at all. But a few light pits made me strip it all down and got for epoxy anyway.
So here were my weapons.
For the more tricky areas i used a propane torch to weaken the paint and sealer and then picked it out with a sharp hook. And I used my sand blasting pot to get to a few tight corners. I looked like id spent the day down the pit when I finnally got it all cleaned up. Once it had an hours worth of panel wipe, it got a liberal coating of the primer and this is how she currently sits.
You will note I havent got the rear valance on, I wanted to take advantage of this wear dry weather and cover the bare metal up. I will work on the vlance in the week.
Then ive got to spend many hours seam sealing the whole thing. I think ill need to stick some decent music on and take my brain out.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
A small update for you this week, it was a job I hadnt been looking forward too as it was actual body work. And I can cock that up far too easily. The results a very nice though. Monday evening I was having a potter and clean up in the garage after and hour I was about done. I thought id just have a quick look at the rear valance and do any set up work to make the job easier on tuesday evening. One thing led to another, and the panel just about fell on the car, it all went very well. Those are the best kind of evenings, it was warm and still doing a job which I hadnt planned to do and it was no effort.
Here it is lined up after a rough cut.
Further trimming, and a little work to take some ripples out as well as getting it to follow the contour of the body.
And welded on.
Im sure you've noticed it is still the missing the bumper iron slots, I fitted both rear wings to give me a reference points and then made up a couple of pieces with out the iron holes in. Welded them in and then with some careful measuring and filing. I put the slots in.
Here is the nearly finished job.
Tomorrow night i plan to get the gridner out and tidy up the welds, followed by a coat of epoxy and then its all in primer. I have also made a start on the seam sealing. This week is the Le Mans 24, I will be putting that on in the garage and spending hour upon hour in there sealing away.

I'll be very disappointed if you don't get the seam sealing done in the 24 hours of the race

Id like to have it done before then! Last bit of epoxy on tonight, then radio le mans final preview on Le Mans will be on and ill be seam sealing away. I want to seam seal it and then get the primer on and some colour so I can get the body outside and build the pan up this weekend,

Well, qualifying is over, how did it go for you ?
Did you ever resolve what paint colour your fasty is / was ?

Better than it did for Ginetta, over half way done with the seam sealer. Will do an hour or two later hopefully. Hows the T25. ive been keeping na eye on the thread.
It was definitely marina blue when it was new. But the blue which has been painted on the top isnt marina blue and nor myself or anyone else likes it. So I havent found out what colour it is. But the bigger question of, what colour will I paint it still remains. Well Shade anyway, its going to be blue.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Are you restricting yourself to VW colours ?
Nothing happened for a few weeks on the T25 - other priorities. I did pick up a WBX engine this afternoon which I am in the middle of partially stripping down to see what's wrong with it. I've got it to the point it turns over 360 degrees now.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
If only I knew, I was trying to restrict myself to type 3 blues. But none really tickle me right. I like the colour on the filler flap, but its not a VW colour, so I might just have to get that custom mixed.
Ah thats good, what did you remove to get it to turn? crank?

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
I was sending a subliminal message for Riviera Blue.... one of my cars is that colour and I was / am really pleased with it, it doesn't photograph well though, comes out all sorts of shades. On the other hand there's a Boxster near me that's been done that colour and it just looks tacky. I do have a strong leaning to originality on road cars though, race cars are a bit different.
On the engine I removed one side and then it turned over. Most strange as I didn't see anything wrong, it has been suggested that the dizzy drive may have been locking. WBX are still very close to the type 4 engine, I'm just about to go to the unit to do some more stripping, there's a thread on 8090

I dont want metallic. But I best hurry up and decide what I do want. The body is all but ready to go on the pan. So it needs the underside painting

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
I feel I owe you an update then, not too many photos to be sharing this time. But I got myself some wing fastener seals made.
I figure that the body sanding and shaping is going to get boring so Id do it abit at a time. I then found this as I started.
So thats another repair ill have to repair. Though at least its not my old repair this time
The next thing I have to do was choose a colour, or to be more specific a shade. I could put it off no more. I went to the local paint suppliers and they dug out the original VW colour chips for me. I had a look at marina blue, this cars original colour. While I was there niagra blue caught my eye, I bought a couple of test pots and marched on home.
A quick rub down of my wings, followed with some high build.
The left is marina and the right is niagra.
This confirmed to me that I dont really like the marina blue, which is a shame. However I did like the niagra, but it wasnt jumping out at me as amazing so I was left with a bit of a deflated feeling.Nnot knowing where to go with it, I left if out of mind for a few days and then returned to looking at that filler flap, its just a bit darker and a bit greener. Over a lunch time pint a friend suggested to me that if I wanted to say in the 70s VW colour world, why not try neptune blue. It doesnt seem to be a photo friendly colour. None the less I went to the paint shop and looked at the chip. Its near enough the same as the filler flap. I bought myself half a litre as i was quite taken with it and painted half a wing against the marina blue. I was convinced, this is straight from the gun. Once polished this it will look fantastic.
With that big decision out the way, ive finished the seam sealing, started to shape up the repaired rear wing and been working my way along painting the underside in Neptune blue.
That's all for now resto fans

Ah yes first available, but it was available for 10 years so that counts are more 70s than 60s :P
My point being, that was a CPO VW colour during this cars year, even though it wasn't available on a type 3

L50K Neptune Blue was used on buses from 1968-73.
Looks good though.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Ta very much. I think it was around as late as 79. It was VW's commercial van colour. But its a VW colour, it was available in 1971 and most important of all, i like it
