Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Few odds and sods today. Repaired my bumper bracket at work today
Then when i got home turned my attention to the inner front panel.
Having worked out my gas regulator on my welders playing up and not letting me have any gas ive only been able to tack (badly at that) bits together.
Still more shaping to do. But its all i had time for this evening

Few more photos to add later on but today i found a few hours of my own so ive tacked this in
and then this lovely hump had 3 patchs over patchs ect
so out it comes
Ive got the new bit tacked in. Need to get some photos later.
Welders run out of gas though so i cant really weld anything in. Must splash on a real one instead of this toy thing

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
The past few sessions have lead to the inner wing starting to take shape.
Have done a little myself Shaun came round again today and did all the work while I pottered about trying to look busy.
I’ve managed to lay my hands on a complete type 3 floor as well so large sections of that will be getting bolted into mine when I’ve got it all derusted and painted.
But for now front end structure is where were heading.
Next section of bonnet guttering. Typical its a few mm short.
After this I got a bit carried away with the grinder thinking well that’s too rusty to well to. Bust cut it out. End result being a biiiiig hole.
Then Shaun went about undoing one of my f@*k ups. And doing some proper welding with his proper welder and not my toy thing.
And as he left it today.
I then made and fitted this to fit the hole.
The more eagle eyed among you will have notice id taken this before the work Shaun did.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
If you can get the front end off a rusty Type 3, the front part of the inner wing between the rusty area and the luggage bulkhead can be reversed to repair the opposite side. The pressings all match, it's just got a bit too much curvature on the top lip. You have to beat out the bottom part to suit the corner, but it's nice metal to work, and with care and time it's possible to make an 'invisible' mend.
Dave.
Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Yeah ive got a complete type 3 front end. The inner wings on it are ok. So ive been using as much of them as i can to repair my own. And by repair i mean replace as mine isnt even rusty, its simply not there anymore

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Anywho next update. Not a great deal due to working on madbugers at the weekend and then a few problems last night.
But this is something i managed to get hold of a week or so ago. Lots of usable bits and things to make templates from. So im going to take a few choice cuts and have them blasted.
This morning i was adjusting my wing and making sure it all fitted at the inner wing replacement.
Once the door pillar bottom is sorted the wing bottom will sit correctly
And this evening i started on the other side.
An inch or so of the front needed removing as it had been previously welded and then rusted through again.
So ive cut it out and stuck this bit on. Still needs some shaping but i got tired so i stopped tonight.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Little attack tonight.
Got this from the front end.
Will be fitting it in sections simply to allow for adjustment along the way.
Cut this out for the next section. Rekon its enough patches?
And then next one glued in.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Today has been a good day
Heres a few photos from the past week. The main structural member at the front. the outer skin was pretty shot, and i had another one so out with the old and in with the new.
Then this is the work of shaun. using the chassis i bought as a template he made a new drivers side front corner for the chassis.
Ive not got any photos of my chassis state on yet but its the 6 inches from the outer edge that are buggerd.
and late on today ive got plodding on with the inner front panel.
So I cut off the front end.
You can just about see in this photo on the left there was a 2 inch gap so i welded a strip in there.
Followed by this large lump
And then to the extreme right theres a gap to the inner wing which ive filled and then that little rectangle to the left of it.
I subsequently started making the bottom of the outer front in preparation to reattach it.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Well ive been abit slack with updating this, But the spare front end i had has now been taken to with the 9in grinder and the last few little bits i needed have been removed the rest was scrapped.
Much the same with the chassis I bought, ive cut the useable floor pan bits out and had the blasted and zinc primerd last week so therye ready to help rescue whats left of the floor.
Back to the work on the car.
Ive had the front end away as you know. Done alot of seam sealing and on weds evening I cut out the spare wheel section from another fasty (thanks fastygaz) and used parts of it to help repair mine.
So i started with the “crash structure” holes which also help create the spare wheel well.
Once id got most of these bits on i popped the wings back on as id be using these to help me a line the front end.
And then i set about repairing the front end. Again more crash structure holes.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
And lastly tonight I finished off the guttering and then filled in some gaps in the inner wing.
Shaun has also taken some steel and had it folded to replace the heater channel and channel in the floor pan.

Right the spare wheel well is nearly complete bar about a 2in x 1in piece to the left in the photo. Then a couple of support braces to do.
Shaun was around again yesterday only because he wanted his oil changing :P
He set about the sill, he had a new inner folded and the channel for the chassis to bolt it on, he drilled and welded in captive nuts and then glued it to the car.
Note the pen and rule placed in the next photo, and attempt a professionalism
What we didn’t take a photo of is the nice clean inside which is all etch primered
Mean while I’ve been removing the pedal cluster due to the fact the floors missing in that area woops. And I’ve taken the master cylinder off to be cleaned and resealed. And mr moler has given me a spare for the time being until I get sorted out
We also had a visit from barry in his turbo bug and it sounds rather lovely!
And finally i jacked up the rear end to look at them heater pipe for madbuger and
It lifted the front clean off the stand so I’ve still got plenty of torsional rigidity in the chassis!

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
This evening i spared a few hours to sort out the pedal cluster. Took the best part of an hour to remove the shaft from the pedals. Dried up grease and dirt Cheesy
Its all have a good clean up and paint/grease where needed, so once theres a floor in the car ill have somewhere for it to go

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
So photo time.
Finished the front end, added these little supports.
As this was all i had left.
Now it looks much better
I then turned to the rear corner which i knew was buggerd.
A little work on the inner skin.
And then the floor to sill which was a right mess.
Ive removed alot more than this and made up parts of the new sill and chassis.
As with everything on this car its been plates over rust, in parts of this there was three lays so it just rusted through super fast so ill be removing all three and replacing them with one good piece.
