Today big steps forward.

Covered the wheels in primer ready for real paint.

Image

Hands up who likes them.

Image

Im a very happy chappy :D

Luckily shaun came round to do some real work, decided it was easier to just take the whole floor out for better access to the foot well for the new closing panel and pan edge.

So i cleaned that up, primed and stone chipped it.

Image

Image

While shaun got his head around where the pan, closing panel, and frame head all met.

Image

This is the snake tin trimmed to suit the gap it was filling with the closing panel bolted too it.

Image

Then sticking it in.

Image

And painted up

Lots to report from this weekend. After shuans work the other night, I made the door pillar bottom.

Image

And in making this I decided this would be a good place to close the sill so the heater airflow would reach the windscreen.

Image

Image

Then a cheeky phone call to Shaun again Friday evening and he tig welded a few more bits for me to make the rest of my pan edge. The darker bits on the right of the photo.

Image

Sunday morning barrie came around to help me refit the front beam (thanks again)
After a little arguing it wouldn’t go on properly as one of the original brackets was a bit rusty so we had tried to fit a replacement but it wouldn’t have it. So I’ve ended up repairing the original. I did take a photo but for some reason my photo taking device decided not to save it.
Any who I thought id have a butchers at what my new tyres would look like.
Here the difference in height old v new.

Image

They look tiny in the arches. But they will do the job for now.

Image

Image

So play time over i need to make a floor pan from lots of bits that i have.

Image

Lots of metal gluing and I’ve just about made the pan.

Due to the very fine weather we've had of late, well not this past few days, but prior to that. The silage decided it wanted cutting early this year. So last week saw 13 hour days at work which left very little time for VW fixing.

So lovely hot weather almost completely dry and not much wind. Silaging was done in record time of Less than a week, usually takes nearly two. Saturday rocks up and I get up at a reasonable time ready to set about fitting my floor.

Not long after lunch I began to feel dizzy, then i got tooth ache and head ache and so on. I gave up about 2ish, just feeling awful so i got rested up.

In the end i got my arse into gear and I've got the floor welded in and then bolted all down the new sill. Lots of lovely etch primer and seam sealent. This evening I've sorted out the pedal cluster mount, welding the base plate down and aliening the pedals.

Ive got a few other bits mocked up ready for assembly. More photos and details later.

Well the updates are few and far between but at least the work isn’t!

I didn’t want to take the rear wing off, for the fear of making more holes, but the rear corner was that bad i had to.

But luckily I took it off and no further holes appeared :)

Image

The same deal with this rear corner, well not quite as major but pretty similar.

Image

Image

And here it is all mocked up

Image

Welded and seamsealed

Image

The majority of the floor is ok, just a few inch wide strip down the pan edge where some bad repairs have been done. And this one section in the rear foot well.

Image

Image

Ive then spent time making up a new pan edge from a pan I had and some section shaun had folded for me.

Image

Gaps filled in.

Image

And finaly heres the patch work quilt that is the front inner arch.

yer i know it would have been better made from fewer peices, but complexity of the shapes would have taken up more time. and as I have no time at all. I just made it as fast as i could

I didnt know how bad it was. When i bought it there was two or three small holes (no more than an inch square) in the front archs. And then the common type 3 fault of the spare wheel well being rotten. And to be honest i did the arch repairs and left the spare wheel well and drove it for two years and it still passed mot's. But in the end a few other holes and problems crept in so i stop using it when the mot ran out.

This work started and we came across all this lovely rot all over it. Could believe what i found, but i stuck to the mastermind phrase "Ive started so ill finish"

There's a few out there that are much worse than you'd think, even when outer sills are still original and good. As I say, a big hole is no more difficult to mend than a lot of small ones, but I don't want to have to do either if I can help it!
