Well looks like im on a winner! here it is this morning. running on the test stand. click it, its a video
And them removing the engine this morning it fell on my fingers and i lost a lot skin and blood, but
and finally
Still some tuning to do but its seems to be abit more pokey that the old engine and it leaks less oil! So ill ride to work tomorrow to see how it is on fuel and then give it and oil change

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Ive got all excited this past week, got my big engine out and seriously working on it. As a psychological ploy I set her up and started her up, of course ive told myself this was to prove the engine before i set about modding my tinware and other bits and bobs.
But heres the video, see if you can spot where the misfire clears

New wheels bearing fitted today, it got rid of the wining noise so that was an hour or so well spent think the ball joints are on their way out. I shall have to order a new set soon! But the engine its doing cracking mpg, 35+
Looking forward to a run over toe stanford hall. Got about 100 miles on the engine now so ive adjusted the tappets too and its never missed a beat

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
that's great news, I hope I can get 35mpg but it'll be a challenge in an automatic!! I may go over to Stanford myself but won't know until nearer the time as it depends what the missus is working..

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
yeah i need to add on around 10 000 miles to make it the same. but ive got a cordless drill haha. I dont fancy taking it to bits to change the milage as its in such good condition.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
would take for ever and you need to have a reversible drill to add miles, I tried and took ages to to do a few miles lol!

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Right ive made a little start on this. Took a rear wing off and its a mess, no photos yet as I havent finished crying.
But I did strip a seat down to repaint the base.
Took the drivers seat out to smarten it up because I want to make sure I do plenty of the detaily bits on this car since someone else is doing all the boring welding!
Didnt go to town but i gave it a quick rub down and just painted it up with a nice durable paint.
Went through my selection of wheel bolts to find the best 16, Unfortunately they arnt all the same but are all genuine VW ones. I got them sand blasted at work today. Ive since put several cost of gloss black on and they look like this

It's a good idea to clean off the paint from the shoulders of the wheel bolts and the countersink areas on newly-painted wheels to make sure they don't loosen when fitted and the paint is compressed.
Dave.

I did think that, but they will be baked before theyre used. I shouldnt have been so lazy and just taped them up first

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Well my goodies are slowly starting to turn up. and the welder is coming over tomorrow evening to make a start.
I saw the price of the seals on T3D for the rear wing to body, mud flap. A quick browse of the woolies trim site found the mud flap seal, and a rubber seal which i thought might be good for the airbox to wing seal.
The mud flap is spot on and at £3.50 a meter its a bargain. I may have slipped up with the air box seal as its quite thin, but I think I can make it work.
heres a few of my repair panels, I think i bought this at EBI4 and as EBI5 has jsut passed it shows how long ive been planning this work!
And this was thanks to purplepeter and the major collection!
I either need to get my hands on or make the otherside of each. I may as well make the rocker panel as I think ill need to over size it but I definitely need the OSR bumper mount
I bought a sheet of the fire proof sheet for the under side of my engine hatch. it said it was fiber glass backed but its not the same stuff as fitted from the factory so ill have a play at the weekend and see how it works out

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
The welder came this evening, weve got it all in order and hes going to be back monday evening to make a start on the rocker panels!
Mean while I started to tidy up the engine hatch, looked like this.
I cut out my new piece. its not quite the same stuff but it will do for now.
Ive painted the metal lip so when its dry tomorrow ill glue the heat proofing on! Then ill clean the top face too.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
In between other jobs this weekend I've got a fair bit done.
Fitted the new heat shielding to the hatch
So heres a few photos of what im up against.
Took the drivers door off to inspect the bottom. Its nice and solid! Some light surface rust so I rubbed it down, etch primed and filler primed. The window lifter is about shot though.
I had to cut out the bottom corners as they were bubbling up.
I had an hour this evening, knocked out one of the bottom corners.

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Fantastic work so far. Could I ask, does the seat bolt straight onto the corners of that base or is there extra framing, I ask as I have a set of German Car Company Awesome seats that I took out of my bug before I sold her, and the sub frames are no good for the fast back and wondered how they might fit seeing the base has made me think that I might be able to bolt them onto it as getting frames made up is well beyond my capability and wallet !!!
All the best

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Thanks very much! Im not 100% on what you mean but ill try and help as best I can. The seat bottom doesnt bolt to the base its self. It has 6 or 8 tabs that you fold round with a hammer and punch to clamp the two together.
I can take some more detailed photos when I get round to the other seat if you want?

Re: 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback
Thanks that's brilliant, only if it is no trouble. A piccy of the seat on it's base from the underside may be useful of possible.
Thanks again
