1972 Fastback

Post by Mike D » 23rd February 2009 - 10:00pm

I picked this up the other week, it's been off the road since 2003, needs a few patches of welding to the inner arches, the dent knocking out / wing replacing, and an engine fitting. It seems to have got around quite a bit back in the day, and my plans are to keep it in the style it is now, but with some smoothing and a respray, albeit in the same colour :)

Some pics then..

Thanks for the welcome everyone, it is indeed the one off retro-rides, I moved it from my mates to my house last night, so it's now settled in my garage so i can start tearing it to bits to see what i'm dealing with.

Image

I'd quite like to lose the number plate bulge and the lower valance holes, is it an early nose i need to do this? as mine has a bit of grot in the bottom corner...

I'll pop some more pics up later when i get back out the garage from removing the wings. Please excuse the large amount of wood in the garage too!!! :)

Evening update...

Wing and bonnet are off...

Doesn't look too bad under there, but there's a couple of old grotty repairs:
Image

Out with the chisel and hammer then!
Image

A bit more poking and whacking has left me with a pile of sweepings and this:

Image

Image

Not a pretty sight! screwed on bits of fillered over tin ahoy!

Ah well, I shall carry on prodding tomorrow if I get a spare hour and see what panels I need. I assume i might be looking at a heater channel to sort the grot? or is it the sill / rocker?

The Number plate bulge on mine was cut out and smoothed over using the original front panel. The rear number plate light had the same treatment. Good luck sorting out all the rust! mine has some rust problems in the same areas which I need to get sorted. No MOT at the mo.

Cheers fasty '72, I think that's the way i'll end up going with mine. I've emailed T3D to see if the sill / rocker panels they do are suitable to repair the a post area grot, i can sort the inner wing ok but don't fancy trying to construct the other bit!

No progress today, working nights isn't the best for getting stuff done! Hopefully i'll get the grinder on the sill panel tomorrow though to dig out the swathes of filler and see what the crack is! I want to get the rear wing off too so i can see whether it's straightenable and what horrors are lurking behind it

Popped back into the garage earlier, and removed the rear wing. It's much better at the back than the front thankfully, needs a couple of patches re doing and the rear flange tidying and welding, but overall i'm pretty happy. Just need T3D to get back to me to see if their panel is any good!

Next stop is to grab a mate sometime in the week and move it to the other side of the garage to check out the other side

I moved the fasty to the other side of my garage earlier, and removed the drivers side front wing. It seems a little worse than the other side, and once I remove the nasty patches i'm sure i'll discover a bit more. The sill and a post seems the same too, crusty and grotty!

I'm going to try and get the rear wing off on Saturday, then i'll get the sills ordered.

Went to Machine Mart and bought a wire cup brush for the grinder, and had a quick hour in the garage this afternoon, MOAR STEEL REQUIRED PLEASE!!

Rear wing off.. Doesn't look too bad..
Image

Ah wait, the end of that sill looks a bit ropey...
Image

One swift whack of my hammer later..
Image

Whack number 2...
Image

That'll need some welding then!
Image

Todays sweepings! They include a load from the inner rear arch.
Image

And my wire cup brush, goodbye surface rust!
Image

Overall, this side is a fair bit worse than the other side, however, I've bought some sill repair panels from Rhod Grubb, so they should take out most of the grot, and I can fab up some other repair panels for the inner arch. It's going to need the battery tray on the floorpan replacing too, hopefully T3D's small panels will be better than their floorpan halfs.

I shall give all the inner wings a good wire brushing over the next week, and then i'll look into chopping out the grot and making up some repair sections.

Hi Mike been watching this on retro rides where I log in as generally01.
Like I said over there, if I can help let me know, I went through the same repairs last year.
Dave.
