1972 412 restoration starts here.

Post by simon p » 25th June 2009 - 10:46pm

My name is Simon, i'm from Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk. I had my first Beetle in 1985 for my 18th birthday present, i have had loads of aircooled stuff through the years but only one Type 4, back in 1992. I started my own restoration comany on 2004 specialising in Opel Mantas www.suffolkcountymantas.co.uk .

I,ve had a hankering for another Type 4 for a while and i've finally got one, collected it today.

I'm going restore and mildly modify it over this coming winter in my workshop working around my 'day' job. Hopefully it will be ready for the Volksworld show in March 2010.

That's Ernest Hurdle's old car. He has been a club member since 1991. he was very proud of it - I think the bumper rubber has been replaced with some marine D-section fender material. I've got a detailed description from him explaining how he fitted it, and the odd photo of the car back then.

I think some of the technical information in the club technical manual came from him.
Dave.

It is his car, still sporting a club sticker in the back window. Sadly, he has become ill and recently had to go into a nursing home, i bought it from his lovely wife Violet, via ebay. I promised her it would be going back on the road and it will.

I would be interested in seeing his car in it's younger days.

I'll try to find the letter, but not too hopeful as it was many years ago.

http://www.sealsdirect.co.uk/bbCMS/shop ... rtmentId=5 looks to offer possible sections - I think it's probably not as wide as 1", so 22mm might be about right. Just need some way to taper the ends to the bumper. Probably need to glue it on, though I think Ernest used a strip internally, as the original does. I don't recall how he bolted it on though!
Dave.

Sadly there is no rubber on the bumper either front or back .. I assume you mean the same as the beetle Euro bumpers are ?

But there are quite a few mods he has done over the years as far as I can make out....

I'll post a topic in the Type 4 forum about the car at present...
