New member Notch

Post by scarab » 16th August 2009 - 12:52pm

Hi guys! Just wanted to say g'day from Australia and show you a picture of my new purchase....a 1967 notch. It may look different to what you expect a '67 notch to look like, but that's because its an Aussie one....they built them slightly different down here apparently (front turn lights etc.)
I look forward to posting more pics when I pick it up next weekend.
Great site by the way....very informative and helpful!
Cheers!

G'day. The small indicators are often fitted for choice to replace the deLuxe small wrap-rounds, but oddly the USA had them on all their '69 models as they brought in a law to make the indicator visible from the side, and the small wrap-rounds weren't. They then put on the big ones from '70 which most definitely were! They also put in a side-marker bulb for the US market.

There's a book written by Simon Glenn, another Aussie, who includes all the VW differences around the world.

Thanks for the welcome guys!
I found out on another forum (sorry guys, you weren't my first  ) that the Aussie 67s actually used a lot of 65 stuff....so the front lights etc. are correct for the year (assuming it is actually a 67, I guess I will find out when I take delivery and check out the chassis numbers etc).
I look forward to getting to know you guys better and sharing my plans for the notch, and work in progress photos....I am really excited!! I guess that will wear off when the hard work starts!
Cheers!

Like the South African ones, the Australian ones have certain differences from the German-built versions.

I think Australia is the only market where they actually made body pressings for some years of their production. They also produced the panel van in significant numbers. The South African Type 3s used early parts (eg 5-bolt wheels and kept the front drums for quite a while) to reduce the spares stocks needed.

Nigeria got panel vans, and I think Ireland, too. I assume it was a matter of what would sell, so I guess SA had alternatives from other manufacturers.

Looks like a good base to work on. We're used to big areas of brown rust on projects here.
