1970 Squareback Project
Re: 1970 Squareback Project
everything is perfect and looking fantastic! I should put some effort into doing a few jobs on mine, I think I've killed the battery so that's the 1st job!
let me know how you get on with your Eberspacher install too, another job I have to do over the winter..

Re: 1970 Squareback Project
thanks Marko - bit by bit it's getting there.
Will definitely make up some drawings of the eberspacher brackets and send your way along with pics of the install.
I have had it working on the bench so looking good so far - let me know what you are missing and I will measure and take pics of bits other than brackets.
I am missing the air inlet that sits next to the exhaust - but apparently you can use stainless flexi rather than find the hard pipe that goes under front wing and curves up into the fuel tank area.

Re: 1970 Squareback Project
I'm missing that piece too and was going to use something similar and just have it in the boot area, it's just an inlet after all.. I could do with knowing how long the exhaust is too and which way it goes, mine is rusted out so will fab one from scratch as the guy in Poland never got back to me whom has them for sale.

Re: 1970 Squareback Project
Great work, love the red interior
Re: 1970 Squareback Project
A few things going on with the car -
got the front end and steering finished at last and bumper irons and bumper mocked up - having the bumpers painted silver grey and fitting black bumper strips.
auto gearbox fitted plus a ton of other stuff - rear shocks, drive shafts, brake lines, handbrake cables, gearbox connections - hours worth of laying under the car - should have doe this bit in the summer!
engine has started assembly too - a good xmas project.
76 x 90.5 - 1955cc.
Original case only had 30k on it so no need for align bore - just had the spigots cut for the barrels, cut for full flow and all the oil plugs removed and hot tanked so everything is clean.
Had the auto flex plate drilled for 8 dowels ad the whole bottom end balanced.
running a torque cam and CNC smalll valve heads for strong torque.
plenty more pics coming as the build starts.

Re: 1970 Squareback Project
thanks Marko - I am looking forward to that too.
My sister is getting married March 2014 so the pressure is on.
Lots more pics coming soon and hopefully get it out to some events next year...

Re: 1970 Squareback Project
some more work on the engine today - slow work.
Built the scat rods up with bearing shells and then checked them for clearance with platigage - all good.
Then built the crank up with rods using build lube.
Used the main and pulley bearings and dropped the crank and rods into the case to see if the stroker crank fitted - it didn't!
Marked the case up and then got the die grinder out on roof of case and piston spigots - not a lot needed to come out but it has clearance now.
Next is die grind the remaining case half and have the whole lot hot tanked so I can start building the bottom end for good -

Re: 1970 Squareback Project
Bit of an engine weekend - finally got the long block buttoned up - after much measuring, fitting, cleaning, measuring and refitting...
The cam bearings did not fit very well for some reason - maybe a bad batch - moved to a set of silver line bearings and they fitted a treat and cam thrust clearance was much easier to sort.
A few pics below - the overall compression ration came out at 8:1 which should be good for a daily and not run hot - hopefully.
Valve geometry next then close it up and paint the tinwear ready for it to go back in...

Re: 1970 Squareback Project
Been busy working on the engine for the last few weekends - so many little jobs to sort when you mess about with stroke and convert to carbs with an automatic.
Was going to convert to Alternator but did not want to hack the tinware around too much - there is someone on TheSamba who is making brackets to allow bolt on of Denso alternator but not ready now.
So rebuilt the generator - re insulated the field coils, cleaned everything up and put some new brushes in - nice inexpensive job but took about 8 hours!
Lots of messing about with the tinware to get it to fit the longer stroke and fit around the carb manifolds - which also need drilling and breathers fitted for the gearbox vacuum - I went with 10mm ID and hope that works.
A few pics of the work below - fitting full flow also required a lot of modification to the engine hanger, the fan shroud needed clearencing and holes covering inside - getting close to fitting it n car over next couple of weeks.

Re: 1970 Squareback Project
Looks good!!!
Re: 1970 Squareback Project
Big day today - got the engine in!
Much easier than fitting an engine in a beetle.
A few pics - lots of wiring and plumbing now for the oil filter / cooler and other stuff.

Re: 1970 Squareback Project
That looks great
Re: 1970 Squareback Project
getting closer - certainly less parts on the garage shelf which must be a good sign
did a load of work on the interior last weekend - hopefully get it finished next weekend - Easter 4 day weekend...
got the wiring routed through the car and fnally got the carpet and mats down - really time consuming fitting it up.
Cannot remember what carpet kit it is - I think its a TMI but bought it a few years back - pretty thin stuff but most of it is covered by the coco mats.
Got some major motivation at the Volksworld last month - great to see so many type 3s inside the show and outside - some very nice cars...

excellent pics dude, really useful for me to see what mine should actually look like,,never will but nice to see panel shapes etc non the less
Re: 1970 Squareback Project
Thanks fella.
The house extension has put the square on hold - put in a safe garage out of the way for a few months
Realy close now - managed to get the eberspacher heater in and the bumpers and rubber strips fitted up
One pic of it on its way to the garage - sadly on a trailer...
