My Notchback.... One for the haters

I have had my share of haters in the past with my projects but hey if we were all the same it would be a boring little life we lead, so embrace life and do what makes you smile......mark.
Thanks for the positive comments. I just enjoy doing something different and having something unique. Something I think you certainly get owning a type 3.

Interesting mods what struts are you using?

It's all from a Cayman..... This also equates to boxster and 997-996 911's as not only do the front all look alike but they share the same front suspension. The steering won't be Porsche though as I'm sticking with a manual rack.

David,
Everything going into the front is from the Cayman (non S). Brakes will be overkill but I happen to have them for each corner so may as well as its cost me £50 for the rear caliper adaptors. I'm keeping my cup 1's. Would love a set of BBS RS's but they're rare ( like most Porsche wheels) with a high 55mm offset. Incidentally my cup 1's are from an Audi S2. Yes I'm aware there is a BBS rs 16x8 et49 currently on eBay

OK, so you are fitting 16" wheels, I was just wanting to make sure that they wouldn't be too big to fit under the arches or too small to clear the disc/ caliper assembly. Don't worry, I'm not going to bid on the wheels

My white cup 1's are 17x7 ET55 and will be staying for the foreseeable future. Previously I had some cayenne wheels which where 17x7.5 et55 and I think an 8J could be squeezed in there however the limiting factor is the tyre. I tried a 225/45/17 tyre before and it just rubbed on everything. I settled for a 205/45/17 tyre, next time I may try a 215/45/17 but I think that's gotta be the largest tyre i'll ever fit underneath the stock arches without major surgery which I'm never going to be interested in doing.
The boxster did come with a factory 16" wheel so would clear the (non S model ) brakes no issue ......
That single wheel on eBay has a starting bid of £350!!!!! Your welcome to bid on it if you like there is a full set of those wheels on stance works for £750 in the USA. I'd say the eBay seller is a dreamer with his price. I'll stick with my cup 1's. If I'm going to be spending some serious cash on wheels I'll go for some rotiforms or image wheels. I would love to have a more classic looking wheel but I require a high offset which is rare with those styles of wheels.

That strut mod reminds me of the Fastback that I saw at a VW meeting at Lisberg in Germany many years ago. It was used as a test-bed for the Type 4 front suspension, but didn't get destroyed afterwards, that would have normally been done. As the Type 4 front end assembly was longer, the car had several inches grafted into the front wings and structure.

I bet this will be an awesome fun drive when completed with that work!
Re: My Notchback.... One for the haters
That's an interesting find you have there. I'm tempted to say the arch is further forward...... Wonder how it drove????miketyp3 wrote:
So I haven't driven it properly yet. Waiting to get some new rear shocks and it's outta it's MOT. Hopefully I can get the shocks done before Christmas but been quoted 2-4weeks to build em. The steering is very light even at low speeds. Like power steering but it doesn't have it fitted. No bump steer either. The wheel has a possibly 2-3inchs of travel is guess and I've not wired it on the soft setting yet. Porsche PASM front shocks an all. Thing is wicked though. Be even better when the strut brace goes on.... Didn't trust the inner wings on their own and neither did VW incidentally it would appear.

Brembos on the rear.
Still awaiting the arrival of my replacement rear shocks. 4 weeks I was quoted. Mental. Put in an order at VW Heritage. Going to finish making the intermittent wiper function work. Also going to wire up the heated resr window and get that working properly. Also I've got to wire up my new speedo to the speed sensor in the gearbox. Lots of small jobs to get stuck into. Might even go get an MOT for it.
