VW Variant SquareBack

Post by paddyg » 12th October 2010 - 10:16pm

Hello just thought id introduce myself as im new to all this, i have VW type 3 Square Back not sure on the age of it. Hopefully somebody on here will be able to share there knowledge with me.

The car was found in my parents garage about 15 years ago. it was owned by my granddad and has been there for as long a I have lived so over 30 years. The car was last taxed in 1980

My brother was going to restore the car 13 years ago but sadly he passed away and I have now finally got round and have found time to restore this family car. I have joined this forum to hope gain advice and to get your knowledge and get this beast back to its glory.

The photo is protected against its actual URL being copied - I guess the owner might be able to put that in the mail, but meanwhile the flickr link is all we can use.

They're often) rusted in place (lightly, hopefully, but usually respond to holding down the leaf spring on the front of the inner rail while using a mallet on the seat frame at the back. Once it moves a bit, it will hold down the spring itself. They come off forwards. It is rather easy to damage the seat base, and it's crackle paint so quite thick and can chip off. You could try some WD40 on the rails and let it soak in for a while if it resists. Feet pushing either side can work too.

thanks guys ill give it a try when i get home, its been driving me mad. and i didnt want to be to firm with it. The main thing im finding is, im kind of over thinking how these cars are designed, thinking there must be more to it then this spring or bolt, but they are really simple and geniously engineered shame mordern cars aren't like this.

It does help if you can persuade a helper to sit in the other seat & hold the lever, whilst youre in the back pushing with your feet

I forgot to mention the lever on the outside of the base - that has to be up as well of course. I don't think it usually rusts up though.

BTW, if the chassis number starts 367 it's a '67 model (Aug 66 - July 67). If it's 366 it's a '66 model. The 3rd digit gives the year model. The 2nd digit is 6 for Squareback, or 1 for Fastback/Notch (just coincidence it reads 67 or 66). The first digit means Type 3. It's detailed on the technical website at http://home.clara.net/hallvw/dating.htm .
