My 66 patina fastback.
My 66 patina fastback.
After having several buses over the past few years I thought it was time for a change, after owning a good fastback in 2007 I hastily sold it in my search for a split bus. So my search was now on for a good type 3 which needed no welding, I hate having to deal with rust repairs so it needed to be a good one!!
While I was trying to sell my last bus I got offered the Paul knight fastback in an exchange deal, although the car was a good one (my brother bought it but then sold it!) it had lots of previous history and lots of previous welding!! When I looked at the owners pictures I couldn't help but notice in amongst his pictures was a real rusty looking fastback which looked like it was a strip car, so I enquired and found out it was a Californian import that was race tuned and had just run a 14 second quarter mile!
So to cut a very long story short we part exchanged vehicles in a deal where I kept my standard 1600 engine from my bus and the chap kept his large engine, gearbox and everything else race related! Basically I received a good bodyshell minus an engine and box! Here are a few pics so far!!
As bought.
Here it is at Santa Pod pre 14 second run
and on stripdown day.
Here's the guy I exchanged with, engine removed.
I have quite a few plans for the car and will update asap with all details.

Re: My 66 patina fastback.
Fast forward a few weeks (august) and I finally had the car at home and could start working out what I needed. This car is a 66 and had straight axles like a beetle, on the previous fasty I did it had terrible camber on the rear, as I didn't want camber the only real option I had was to convert the car to IRS, this threw up its own set of obstructions, mainly I needed a complete gearbox/axles/subframe from an IRS car not to mention rear engine support bar and rear engine mounts. So I bought a donor vehicle which had all the parts I needed and plenty I didn't.
Loaded up for the journey home (July)
Parts donor
Now after owning a rhd fasty a few years ago I really wanted this to be rhd and after much head scratching and working out I dug in and swapped the dash, extended the loom, moved the column and mount brkt over, changed the fuel tank to a rhd one, swapped the pedals from left to right, and moved the master cylinder over to the other side, if you read it quick it doesn't sound to much work ..... but what a pain in the ass getting all the measurements smack on....oh well it's all done now.
Dash out
New dash in and in primer
New dash in and painted
Pedals converted to rhd
So now at this point it has an IRS conversion and is rhd but still hasn't got any of the front end suspension parts and NO wheels!
More to follow asap Col.

Here's a few more pics to get this up to speed.
Master cylinder swapped left to right.
Engine mounts fitted.
Engine in place.
I really hated the seats, they were original as far as I could see but had some brown material inserted where the basket weave should have been so I had all the seats sorted to make them as near as possible to the original 66 style.

Re: My 66 patina fastback.
New exhaust was next on the list and I wanted something that had good ground clearance......so I bought this.
So exhaust fitted I turned my attention back to the wheels. With porsche pattern In my head I only really had one option which were fuch so I bought these and wrapped them in some continentals.
145/65/15 on the front and 165/65/15 on the rear.

Ha ha I know. Although i'm not 100% sure about the decision!!volkswalker wrote:bling bling dude!
Originally I bought these, placed them under the car and a friend photoshopped em in place. I really really wanted these but couldn't get the brakes sorted without spending quite a lot of money, and even then I don't know if they would of fitted. Oh well we'll see eh!

What no beam details?
Re: My 66 patina fastback.
Great work and nice base car. Have you narrowed the beam or are the front fuch alloys have 0 offset as those front ones look great. Also what have you done with the Ercos? i personally thought they looked great and would love a set on my fasty.

Forgot that bit!! It's a 4 inch narrowed 'NEW' beam from slamwerks....bolts straight in using balljoint beetle arms, drop spindles and porsche pattern discs.foxy wrote:What no beam details?

The previous owner kept the ercos, this pic was just a photoshop with some wide 5 ercos that I was toying with!!splitybus wrote:Great work and nice base car. A few more pics with a decent camera, it's about right height wise now and doesn't drive too bad.
