1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Near ready, all the wiring connected, starter, regulator
and generator.
But left with 2 odd looking wires at the starter area, coming from the engine bay.
From the engine bay area, the two cable harness runs from left to right, and out through a hole
into the starter area. Not sure yet whether they enter the harness in the engine bay area,
or run towards the diagnostic plug.
Any comments welcome

More of a quick reply rather than necessarily helpful as I don't know type 3's in great detail.
Most obvious connection would be for the starter solenoid..... but neither of those wires is terminated properly for any type of connection.
They look fairly thick, for something that takes a reasonable amount of current, if that helps ??

They come from your diagnostic socket. One goes the to the live terminal on the starter and the other to the solenoid. Covered in my build thread here.

They were for the diagnostic machine to start the engine.

Thanks guys. Thats the beauty of belonging to a great site,
proper no nonsense answers in a prompt fashion.
I thought they might be that, but could not find it on any of the wiring diagrams I had.
Of now to your link Mr Broady_6 to refresh my self and bring my sparse knowledge on the diag plug
up to speed. last time I checked in there, you were still looking for a plug if memory serves me well.

Fitting new plugs today, and the usual number 3 plug was going to be tricky
as it always is.
But the car being on the mid rise lift with the wheel off, made things surprisingly simple.
First time to do the plug this way. It was usually mallet fingers trying to pass around and under
the carb, kicking and screaming.
But access from the wheel well, through the small hole with a wobble drive on the plug spanner
made things easier.
Plug hole and manifold can be seen here from the wheel well.

Well I fabbed up all the replacement metal surrounding the engine bay.
Maybe I could have allowed a bit more tolerence for me old
mallet fingers.

Perhaps one of you kind gents could point me in the direction of a picture that could show the best option
for organising the rats nest of wiring that normally sits, hidden underneath the air filter.
I,ve done a few googles but cant seem to find a decent pic. And cleanliness is next to godliness

Had a look in the last few pages on my thread. There's a decent piece about rewiring. I will also take some photos this evening to add too it

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Had a chance to remove plug number 3 again today, to change the end to suit my plug caps.
It was a breeze through the wheel well. Nice and gentle and all went well.
And reinstalling the plug with a gentle shaking twisting motion to get it started properly.
Light over head in the engine bay gives great visuals from the wheel well.
I had a few fastys and squarebacks down the years, but never happened or heard of this solution.
Seems to work well for me. I thought there might be a bit of an issue in starting the plug, but a common
sense gentle approach is the key.

Looks like I found a decent pic of a clean layout here. And Bobnotch's comment about
running the fuel line through the body tin instead of the engine tin is worth a look.
I always brought the fuel line through the front tinware.

And now a little later than advertised.
Probably doesnt make it any clearer as its hard to get a sense of depth

I felt like Kim Il after a successful nuclear test launch today
Fired up nicely, just need to finish the wings and pop them back on for a road test.
Mr Plod would not take too kindly to me driving with no wings or doors
Thanks Mr Broady, looks nice and neat, the way it should. Whats the size of the inline fuse to the coil sir?

I cant remember, buts its not to the coil. It's from the coil, its the power supply for the reversing lights. Think its a white one. So 8 amps?

In the local boot sale last week and picked up some great bargains.
Large stock of engineering gear some chap who passed away,
was being sold off at the booter.
Amazing thing was the hoards of booters went mad for some cheap tat that
was for sale at the nearby stall. I was left to scoop up 2 perfect moore and wright mikes,
another perfect M&W depth guage, and a superb boxed elliot bros speed revolution guage,
All for the princely sum of 30 yo yos, as we say here.
Beautifully crafted well engineered tools, now welcomed into my tool collection. I'm still amazed at how little
regard is given to these top quality items, folks are more impressed with cheap and nasty tat from lidl and aldi.
Was there again yesterday, got another M&W micrometer, all steel mechanics screwdriver, and a lovely
panel beaters slapper, 20 euros. I will be there again next week.
