Left hand corner of the engine bay panels need replacing.

Too far gone for patching, so newly made panels were the only option.


Main panel well rotted out.

And just when I'm starting to get these fiddly bits wrapped up,

I manage to get my greasy mitts on a nice little Denbigh no 3 Flypress

for very small money.

Beautiful simple tried and trusted engineering. A perfect tool to enhance the hand eye co ordination.

Where was it many months ago...

More rust removed and replaced with new metal.

Coming along a treat! The drain in the first photos should have a lip along the top for a rubber flap to attach too. Stops the rubbish getting sent back up into the inner wing. Cant tell from the photo if its there or not.

Yep, have them ready for fitting, done a long way back.

Nothing to go on at the time, but I reckon these will do the job.
Drain chutes and door flap. I have some rubber channel seal that
will fit nicely around chute edge.

When the flap is closed, it will sit against the chute
edge face rubber.

One flap for each side, fitting into the bottom panel
of the air intake shroud.

Finally managed to seperate the rotisserie from the shell at long last.
Gives me great access with all the metal out of the way, to give the final
application of TLC to any parts outstanding.
Looking forward to this stage.

Nice solid body now, just hanging around waiting for the final phases,
and a decent rolling chassis with all the new bits and bobs, waiting in
the wings.

I,m now totally spoiled with all the room less the clutter. And a final end to
the days of tools on the ground, and working in poor access and poor light.
I,m spoiled now so I am :D

Spend the next day or two having a good tidy up, and finding tools that have been mislaid
for the last couple of years, and enjoy the final leg of this journey.

Postman arrived today with this box of goodies from China. 180 rubber grommet
assortment. 3 weeks travelling but free postage, and all for the princely sum of £4.
Cant beat that.

Grommet details. Plenty of choice here, so handy to have. I,ve seen single grommets sell
here for 2 euros.

Nothing too serious left at all, considering where I've come from to this.

Mostly seam tidying, bit of small welding, priming, nothing major work wise.

Rims to be painted, primed and finished, new rubber along with the whitewalls.

I think I see light at the end of a long tunnel, but its doable now.

There were times I thought it wouldn,t be.

Ill be doing the slow and steady now for a spell ;)

Tidy up of the cill to A post connection before priming
and seam sealing. Had a lot of hassle on this one strangely,
due to wire feed problems through the lead. I think its well due a new
mig lead.

Dished front end cap on the lower front clip. Its the gearshaft selector rod
access cover plate to allow for removal.

Hammer plannished on the air hammer plannisher.

Made short work of this in 5 minutes, beats all the hand hammering,
and trying to hold such a small disc.

Welded up to the captive disc in order to attach an inner
bracket inside the wheel well for fixing.

Another view of the cover plate on the front lower clip, that clearly shows the
fixing bracket.

Another repair plate located just below where the front windscreen is .
Rotted out due to the leaking window washer spout I suspect.
I mustn't forget to refit it.

Its nice to be making progress with the smaller issues to deal with.
Makes a nice change from bashing larger panels.
Onwards and up wards.

One entomological question as I see it from time to time on build threads, and I'm not picking on you I'm just interested how you arrive at cill for the section under the door. as I always pronounce it with a slippery snake S so Sill rather then Kill but it seems both are correct from a dictionary point of view, but I always read it Kill haha.

Nicely formed dish there, I might have ago at making something like that, just because it looks satisfying to make!

Editor - probably etymological rather than beetles etc (entomology). :D We've just had some UPVC windows done and they used the spelling "cill". Shame they didn't supply the right cill sizes, so had to come back and bodge the job again. Nice windows, appalling fitters.

Its a bygone era thing for me. I had a long career in architectural joinery, my site here,
www.irishwoodwork.com,
and always refered to bottom part of any joinery item as cill, and its in all my ref works on joinery
back to the 1700 as such,

And who am I to argue with history :lol:

At this stage, you can call it and spell it how you like, I,m too old to care :badgrin:

Dish was done as I never had a bullet end plate there originally, probably fell out with
all the rust in that area. making it was a nice respite from all the other slog, and will
suffice for the meantime.

Rubber pad on the plannisher stops your fingers getting pinched to, which is a good thing.

More small nasties, but Genolite is a tried and tested method of cleaning up
rusty craters just like this.
Leading is probably the quickest and best here, but I cant seem to find the tinning
paste

Geno cleans up the area along with a stiff wire brush, in a few minutes.Quick wipe off
with a dry cloth and it dries off to a matt grey finish, ready for the next process.

Is jenolite a rust beater like hammerite kurust?

Jenolite go way back before the 50's I think.
I remember my dad having it in his tool kit, keeping his early 50,s beetles alive.

The prepwork is clean of loose rust, and then apply the gel, and it goes to work.
Its quick about dissolving the rust, and a bit of constant agitation with a stiff wire brush
does the business. Wipe off, and then wipe on another coating and leave for 30 minutes,
then wipe off and leave to dry to a matt grey. I find it good stuff.

Cant say I,ve used hammerites product. I,ve used Vactan and found that good for areas
that has hard access, spray it in and let it dry, it then turns black/blue. I,d say you used it
or similar.

And you being all young you say?? I was like that once, 63 years and ahead full of hair ago :lol: :lol:
