Considering how poor looking the adjusters were in the back plate,
it was no surprise that they were both heavily seized.
However a simple method of removing seized adjusters is to remove
the brake shoe adjusting slotted bolt, and substitute a longer same threaded
bolt into the adjuster. Then a small drop of wd40, and wind up the bolt.
When this bottoms out of the adjuster hole, it prises off the seized adjuster
ring. Or alternately it will it will revolve the adjuster, thus freeing it.
No bashing it and giving it a blunt trauma injury.
Success.

Wile working on the wheel cylinder for the rear brakes, I discovered a bady seized bleed nipple.
needless to say it broke when I tried to open it. So off to get the taps drills ect, for the repair.
Searching through my stash of parts, I came across a brand new T25 wheel cylinder that I bought for my
camper, but didn,t need it. It looked right, out with the verniers.......it matched everywhere.
The only difference was the bolt slot that bears on the shoe was a lot narrower than the existing
fasty bolt groove. But the shoe fits it anyway.
I never knew they were identical at all. You learn something new every day.
As its good enough to stop a T25 brick, its ample for the fasty.
So its now got a new home on the car, instead of on the shelf.

Still working on the rear brakes. And as the adjuster wheel had a broken
retainer spring, I had to make a new one.
New piece made.
Checking for fit.
Now I had to stake it in position.
Existing adjusters cleaned and checked.
New spring and adjuster greased and fitted.
Other adjuster same thing.

Right hand piston in the wheel cylinder, needs cleaning before refitting.
Left hand end in a similar condition.
Cylinder itself needs to be polished internally with 1500 wet and dry paper.
Bleed nipple was replaced, and seating polished with a fine diamond burr by
hand, held in a rubber tube and gently revolved to clean the seat where the bleed nipple
closes against.
Bleed nipple seat was cleaned up with the fine burr, as seen in the picture.
Left hand end in a similar condition.

Backplate added and bearing cap bolts torqued up.
cleaned and working adjusters fitted, wheel cylinder fitted to new brakeline,
ready now for the new brake shoes to arrive from Machine7.

Nice fab work on the adjuster spring, are you on the final build or a mock up? I only as because of the red painted components. Might be the photos but it looks like red oxide.

Its a zinc phosphate primer at the moment, over a coat of rust treatment on the backplates.
Wrong shocks sent from the supplier has put me on the backfoot on the chassis, but you know yourself
there's loads of other stuff to keep me busy.
Front axle and all new steering suspension bits and bobs done. Rear Irs unit all new suspension bushes
shocks, pivot arm bushes, clutch spring all done. Brake shoes just delivered on the shelf at the moment.
New clutch cable, accelerator and heater cables too, these lists go on and on dont they.
I,m gone too far on this now to walk away, so its gonna be a keeper, and my 86 yearold dad

Cleaned up the drums and checked for wear. Both drums are in excellent condition with
no uneven scored wear at all. Just need a bit of a spruce up before re fitting.
Looking ok at the moment,
New rear shocks fitted, finally.
Back plates hammerited ready for new brake components.
New shoes fitted ,
New shock fitted on the r/h side.

Bottom two short springs on the brake shoes are in now as well, but were not fitted

Finally got the gearbox mounts in the post today
As you can see from the left original, what I got was nothing like the original
The left hand original has the backing plate seperated from the rubber mount unfortunately.
Hence the new one.
As you can see its nothing like the original, despite having the same VW part number advertised on the site
I purchased it from. But the part number on the piece I got was not a part number match with whats on my rubber part
And as you can see, even the holes are not equal to the original part.

So I decided the best work around was the following.
Remove the 2 existing studs, and replace them with longer ones.
These will then pass through the new plate, and nuts placed on them will secure the new plate
to the existing mount, via attachment to the IRS.
I still maintain elasticity of the joint, as I have not interfered with the mounting rubbers
attachment
in any way at all.
Here's the pics, and its a good solution to using this mount in this situation.
I had to elongate each hole about 1.5 mm in the new plate.
Here is the new rubber mount attached to the gearbox first.

Here is the driver side bolt passing throughthe IRS, then the existing plate, then the new plate,
and finally tightened with a nut.
As you see here, it passes through the IRS cleanly, then threads into the existing original plate, then passes cleanly
through the new mount, and finishes with a nut to tighten.

Floorpan is finally complete and awaiting a fit to a decent body and wheels and new tyres.
So far its had a rebuilt beam with,
new balljoints, new bushes,new bearings, new wheel bearings, new caliper rebuild kit.
New pads, rebuilt master cylinder, new fluid, new brakelines, new suspension bushes,
new shocks, new brake bleed valves, and fully greased.
New clutch cable, new accelerator cable, new heater cables, and new inner heater cables.
Rebuilt rear axle with,
new suspension bushes , new torsion bar bushes, new shocks, new pivot arm bolts, new pivot arm bushes,
new brake lines, new wheel cylinders,new gearbox suspension mount, rebuilt cv joints,
new brakeshoes, rebuilt adjusters, new gearchange selector coupling.
Brake pedal cluster adjusted, brakes adjusted and bled.
Probably loads more I forgot about, and then there is me santa goodies coming.
Its what I hoped to get done before the christmas, so now I can finally get back on to the body and get that wrapped up.
For me its downhill now,, and i can see light at the end of the tunnel, and its not some bugger with a flashlamp
bringing me more work.

Yeah , but the best laid plans of mice and men, can throw a spanner in the works..
I had similar plans 2 years ago, then I seriously injured my shoulder on christmas day,
and that put back the clock 18 months,
but alls good now, and i,m like a child waiting to open me fasty goodies tomorrow.

Front right hand bumper mount fabbed up and finished ready for fitting.
Driver side r/h front of petrol tank mount , sorner infil.
Front passenger side petrol tank support lip rusted out.
New lip edge fabbed up ready for welding in.
Airbox inspection lid final trial fit and trimming.
Then ready for fixing in
Lots more fiddly bits to do, but its nice to be back at it,
onwards and upwards.

You bumper mount confuses with me that number of bolt holes. I thought early cars were two late cars were 3?
Liking the airbox top top though, not a wrinkle to be seen, how did you make it?

My bumper mounts have two slots on the top, and one slot on the bottom.
But is in a bit of a shabby mess, that will probably need a bit of fettling.
And rather than rely on hitting the mark spot on the first time out, I decided
to pop in a few bolt holes to allow me a good bit of adjustment.
Plenty of wrinkles on my brow tho at this stage;-)
Wrinkle free was thanks to my bench mounted air plannishing hammer.
A great bit of kit for convex or concave shapes. best bit I bought in a long time.
But is in a bit of a shabby mess, that will probably need a bit of fettling.
