1972 fastback. nwe 532k

Post by kaddy » 25th January 2011 - 12:47am

Hi,

My dad has just bought a 1972 VW Fastback. White,
reg number NWE 532K.

On the windscreen was a type3and4club sticker. So i am
sure the previous owner was a club member here, and would like to get a bit
more history on the car. Its in Ireland now about 12-18 months
as far as I know.

Any help would be great. Thanks

It was owned by Clive Shelley in Lancs. back in the early 2000's, but I don't know any more about it.

We didn't have the forum back then. Danny's your best bet, but it depends on whether it visited the shows much.

I've done a phone book search and he's still listed at the same address. no. is 01524 62344 . I don't know anything of his circumstances, but I would guess he would be interested in hearing about his former car, and might have some photos from back then.

Danny's our Events man - organises us to show our cars in a line-up at shows. He has books and books of photos of Type 3s.

Hi there - just, by absolute and complete coincidence, seen this posting.

Yes my wife and I had NWE 532K. We got it about 1998-ish and it was used for the general day-to-day.

NWE was not concours, but quite a tidy car. I did see it later (about 5 years ago), and it was looking a bit scruffy, but otherwise sound. The only issue we had with it was once losing oil pressure suddenly on the motorway, and the engine seizing. managed to get an unused reconditioned engine put in (approx 2001). Our servicing (and NWE's for several years before and after) was done be an air-cool specialist firm in Morecambe, Volkstech ( http://www.volkstech ). Phil could probably fill in more detail for you.

We bought it from a couple in Morecambe who owned it twice. They sold it once, then missed it and bought it back a year or two afterwards, only to then sell it to us to make room for a Morris Minor Traveller for their daughter to learn to drive in. Prior to that, don't know its history, other than being originally registered in Sheffield. In the years we had it, only saw one other fastback on the road!

We sold it to a lady in Lancaster about 2001/2002. I think she sold it on after about 5 years.

We started with VW air-cooled around 1997 with a T2 campervan, and the T3 then sat alongside it. We sold the T3 to make room for a '57 MG Magnette which we then had for 10 years.

Hope you dad enjoys it!

Clive Shelley

Hi Clive, thanks for the heads up on the car. :D

Well believe it or not, I am now the owner of the car, and its going great.

My dad just had a knee replacement, and couldn't mange driving it in comfort, so
its my daily driver now  And I get out in it every day, and its a real talking point where
ever I go.

Mechanically its very good, body wise it could do with a bit of tlc, and a respray. But I,ll drive
it for 12-18 months, and do it then. I have my own 66 beetle to do first, and I,m also driving
my 76 beetle as well. So I wont be walking. But the fasty is definitely my favourite.

I,ve seen pics of the magnette some where on the web, when I was looking for details of the fasty,
and thats a beauty.

kaddy

When I figure out how to post up pictures, I will.

Just mocking up a new heater channel section for my fasty, when I start it in a few weeks time. Just getting my head around the work to do. And maybe the knowledgeable on the site can tell me if the stiffener curved section panel, runs the full length of the heater channel. Thanks

You may be able to tell with probing if you have the sill trim off, but I don't know the answer to that one otherwise.

I think on the earlier models with no heater tube, they did, and curve up at the front end for windscreen heat. Not too sure about the 72 tho.
So a bit of probing then, sounds nasty, lol

Thanks

It goes from the base of the 'A' pillar to the rear wheel arch.
Originally it was part of the pressing that is the inner side of the car.

There's a repair panel on ebay at the moment:

Is that one on ebay, suitable for my car that is 1972. I know my own has the heater pipe in the channel section.

Thanks.

They all have the heater pipe, the only difference is 66 and later have the remote control vent flap - so yes, that one should fit.

I,ll keep an eye on ebay so. But I imagine that they are easy enough to fabricate if I have to. I think the end of the heater channel with the footwell vent at the front, appear to be restoreable, but I,ll know for sure in a few weeks.

thanks

I,m too old for rolling around the floor, did enough of that in my youth,
Rotisserie was a must, and is so handy it takes the slog out of the job. I can sit and look everything in the eye.

I notice that the usual old suspects pop up again and again in every fasty resto. Is it design
or old age or both.

There are places in all mass-produced cars that are poorly protected from water and road salt. Back when these were made, chassis wax was not installed in the factory. Reduction in the quality of steel was another problem, as is deterioration of gap-filling sealants. Luckily, many of the Type 3s go in similar places and not everywhere, so in many cases there's decent metal left to fix repair panels to. The other plus point is that the outer panels are all bolt-on, so the repair to the inner panels isn't too critical as it's not going to be seen all the time, and care and time can make up for lifetime skills and workshop devices.
Dave.
