67 Square Project

Post by dpetteng » 21st February 2011 - 11:37am

So I got my Square a year ago, she is a Cali import and looks pretty solid but lots of rust work to deal with. Started the resto this weekend with disassembly.

My plan is to make her the best car I have done so far (after the 71 camper and 67 bug) and I will be using Hayden (Panel Kraft) again for all the specialist work.

Started stripping her down this weekend and saw a lot of the problem areas:

So all looks like a lot or work. So far I have NOS wings all round, NOS 67 doors and various small parts so if anyone has any other repair panels I would love some help as they are hard to get hold of. I also have a set of original Pedrinis to make her look pretty.

Plan is a show winning resto with a 2026cc engine (based on original case) with FI.

Rust - what rust? Lucky you!

Take a tip from me - hook out all that old cracked seam sealer behind the rear wings, clean up and replace - that's one of the major routes for water penetration and serious rust developing.

Second tip - don't trust the factory applied underseal. It can hide a route for water to get anywhere within a car-length. Any sign of bulging or cracking needs to be investigated. It's a shame as it's a very durable coating, but was applied over the primer dip, so doesn't really protect fully if water can get behind through spot-welded seams.
Dave.
