got to do a little more. wasnt as lucky with the drivers side floor pan, battery had leaked and left a nasty hole and part of the rear passengers floor had water sat inside for a long time and left some bad pitting, a shame because underneath that area the floor was perfect.

cheers. i bought a new welder at christmas and it lays down a really nice weld. a little tricky to tune in but when its set right its one magic machine. its an inverter welder so light as a feather with 180 amp max and it will mig, tig, and arc..

It cost me the best part of 1000 euro. I didn't want to spend that much but I didn't want to buy another DIY welder. So I think its money well spent.

ive been playing around with electrolysis as a form of rust removal on some smaller parts.
i am very pleased with how they came out. the brake disc below was submerged for 25 minutes and this is how it came out.

a serious improvement....
and saves getting any blasting done and risking surface damage, and trying to clean sand out of awkward areas.

Trouble is that the VW wear limit allows only 1mm loss of thickness on the 9mm and 11mm thick discs (early/late). You can see the reduction in surface area where the disc has been contacting the old pads, and the lack of any contact near the edge of the disc. Ideally, if the discs are now thinner than 8mm/11mm early/late, they need replacing.

discs checked for thickness. 10.5mm (good surface to good surface). as for the lip on the outer edge the actual pad in the caliper doesnt cover that area and only covers the worn area (rightly or wrong)..

here are a few more pics of some small parts that have been electrolysised (im guessing thats spelt wrong)..

Image

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
the top one is after dipping, the middle one has a vactan rust and primer coating, and the bottom one has been sprayed in a satin finish..
Image
not a great pic but i wanted to see the difference in a 2k gloss finish (spindle) and a semi gloss finish (arm)
im not sure which looks better has anyone got an opinion on finish im finding the gloss finish a bit blingish.
i want to stay as near as possible to factory finish which i think is nearer to the satin finish.
what have you chaps gone for ?? 1k vs 2k gloss vs semi gloss. and how did it hold up. i think they do a chassis black but never seen it applied.
any info!!!

havent done a whole lot lately.

but did spend some time scrapping off underseal.. i rigged the floor pan and suspended it with 2 ratchet straps from an r.s.j in the garage, made life so easy i can rotate the floor to work on either top or bottom.

Image
Image
welded in a couple of strengtheners at rear on the new floor section..
Image

Image
no paint yet just rust treatment..
Image
Image
went with gloss in the end made sence.. went with red on the calipers the red in the photo looks very pinky but there as red as rosso red in daylight. also changed the caliper bolts to stainless..

ok its been an age since ive updated here but i have been doing a bit more. i finished the underside of the pan and got a healthy coat of body shultz. the upper floor pan has been primed and top coated. the master cylinder has been striped as has the steering box. ive put the beam back together with all new ball joints and track rod ends. a total brake overhall aswell including pads flexible hoses and copper brake lines.

ok im not the fastest at getting things done but what i have done i think has turned out well enough. i no that the car isnt going to see the road this year so im just ticking along with the project and not in any great rush..
ive stripped the rear axle of all components and waiting for them to be blasted along with the wheels and some other bits. so that will be the next job then she will be a roller again..

that looks superb!! love the pic with all the goodies waiting to be fitted, kinda gave me a sense of de jah vous!!

I noticed some bumper seals for the irons, are they bug ones? I looked into this and the type3 never had any!

hi mark im no type 3 guru but my fasty had bumper seals when i got it but were knackered. i brought these off a well known chap on here from a show near dover during the summer. there not the same as bug ones. maybe it was model dependent back in the day but im purely guessing. your car looks brill youve flown through the work load well done chap..

thanks! 8 months and counting now since day one, would have been ages ago if I'd bought a complete car  I've spent more time on internet sourcing parts and information on how/what things fit than I have in the garage  next time round I will be done in half the time (hope the wife doesn't read the last comment :ninja: )

I'm sorry you can't use that car on the road - much too clean. You can have mine instead! Oh, wait a bit, yours is a Fastback ... I'd better not swap then!

well ed it sure is clean right now but how im going to keep on top of it when its finished is a pure mystery as the lane i live in is a country lane with more grass growing in the middle of the lane than in my garden..

ok ive got the rear axle and components blasted and some in paint (pics coming) and the wheels are next. ive removed the tyres but after painting them up ill stick new rubber on allround. the plan for the car is to lower her a tad probably the standard 2 splines, so im wondering what tyres you chaps are running ill be using the standard 15" steelies for now. any info please and maybe a pic if possible...

cheers....

I have "chromies" on mine right now but they are going as the rears are rubbing like mad due to them been a bug offset.. I have 185/55 on front and 205/50 on rear and plan to carry these over to the new wheels, I'll post pics when done.

if you are running standard steel rims and going lower you have a few options.
My preference would be 145/80/15 for the front - not too narrow and probably no issues with turning circle / rubbing if only 2 splines down.
For the back - you could go standard 165/80/15 or try a 175/80/15.
I personally hate low profile tyres on a type 3 - makes them loom odd unless you are running large diameter wheels.
am sure you will hear plenty of opinions on this one Colin...

car is looking great btw - nice to put stuff back together after all the grimy stuff.

thanks for info so far

has anyone else got a preference on tyre sizes?? i only want to buy one set of tryes so i need to get it right..

running the standard wall (80) im guessing wont course any probs at 2 splines. but what if a chap was to be a little naughty and go for a little lower.. :!: ;)

I'm running 175 x 55's on the front and 185 x 65's on the rears, she's lowered with no rear bump stops, although I couldn't tell you by how many splines!
