late fastback full resto
late fastback full resto
well after scraping through the last mot, i knew i would have to do some work before the next one, basically it needed bumper bracket mounts front and rear and a few other bits i knew were bad.
plans are to go for an original colour probably beige, original indicators up front.
ive got some new front and rear wings to fit and a drivers door as the other was shot.
I have never done any welding fabricating so will be learning as i go but (hopefully) keeping it to a good standard!
pics before i started
so i set about on the front
air box was rotten so have blanked the vents up!
going to do a bit of led work on the vents.
rear corner
didnt look too bad till i started stripping it!
two days later (im not the fastest yet)
made a start on the rear bumper brackets today all cut out
glad i got these when they came on ebay
hopefully these will be done in the next few days

Re: late fastback full resto
cheers, one side of the rear is done so hopefully get the other side done tomorrow! will stick some pics up when done
Re: late fastback full resto
I got most of the welding done this week. lots of late nights
started on the o/s bumper bracket,
most of the rot cut out
ive been using vactan rust converter and primer on the bare metal
now i thought the other side was the better side of the car but it turned out to be worse
other side all in
rear corner lots of plates and filler
cut out
ive got a few more bits of welding to do and will hopefully have these done in the week, also started stripping all the paint off the engine bay and painting it.

that look like the same operation that i had to carry out on my own fasty (orange fastback) looks like real common places to go on these. your hammering through the work its a great feeling to cut out some rot and within a small amount of time have a new panel fabed up and installed.
im also using vactan rust converter on any metal that i bare it seem good gear..
keep it up..

cheers chap, looks like yours isnt far off paint!
made a start of this hidden under filler
it has been done really bad in the past so only one thing to do
my mate is very helpful and gave me a hand with this as i didnt want to mess it up
cut ready to be fully fixed in
i have made up the inner pannel, going to do a night on friday to finish this off
the other side will get the same treatment
vent expertly bodged with filler
my grinder gave up so i replaced it with a newer model! nice and light makes a huge difference to the old bosch
a bit of bearmetal
Re: late fastback full resto
Very nice buddy!!
All the usual type 3 flakey, orange nonsense but satisfying when you get it looking less like a teabag...and you're making good progress!!
I thought it looked shit hot in the first pic by the way...ragged paint, primer on show, shiny bumpers and cosmics...beautiful!!
Gaz

cheers thats a cool pic, Not had much time on it recently due to work but its about ready for paint prep! ill stick some pics up
Re: late fastback full resto
It's been a while since I updated this! progress has been slow but it's slowly getting closer to some paint!
All metal work has been completed.
Lead loading over the welds
Floor has now been painted had to do it twice because I got a lot of water coming through the gun
Front stone chipped
q
I have never done any prep work! I didn't realise how time consuming it is! Im getting the hand of it now tho
I spent a lot of time lining up all the gaps lines etc Hopefully it pays off!

Re: late fastback full resto
Thanks for the kind words, hopefully I'll get some time off over Christmas to crack on with it! I've bare metalled every panel inside and out!
I am a sucker for anything cosmic! I've got some 14's in 4x130 I'd sell! Don't think I'd ever use them!

haha,im a sucker for anything 130pdc and round!!
i kicked myself for not buying a set of cosmics (read cheap)off a chap at bristol volksfest a few years ago.oh well!
could you email me a few pics of the 14's and a price please.i know money talks, but would you be up to trade with some different wheels,or is it just cosmics(and mag industries!!)you tend to have.
by the way,how many sets do you have?

Hi Dave
Im also into any 130 wheels as long as there original I'd be up for a trade if there something different, I think I've got about 6 sets of cosmics.. There all in line to get refurbed at some point
The 14s are a set of 5! I will get some pics when I get in the garage next!

Man, this is great. I hope to be able to do the same kinda work when I pick my fastback tonight.
I just joined the site a few days ago, but there is some great info here.

Hi oxsign, welcome to our world! I never cease to be amazed at the skills out there being used to preserve these cars from the scrap-heap. It's very encouraging to us all.
Dave.
Re: late fastback full resto
Well said Dave. Those of you with the patience and skill to cut, fabricate and weld these type 3's to keep them on the road deserve to be commended.
I'm terrified of taking to my squareback with a sharp cutting instrument for fear of ballsing it up but I know the only way I'll ever get it back on the road is to do the work myself. The photos and tales you all post of your exploits are inspiring to those of us who are preparing to take the plunge with a bit of DIY restoration.
Cheers & Merry Xmas

Re: late fastback full resto
What's new ? it's ready?
Re: late fastback full resto
Not done yet. Very busy summer working, have not had the time to work on it.
I painted it last winter! the rear end has just been narrowed an inch either side so I can get some 6j wheels under that's all painted now ready to go back in, hopefully I will get a good couple of weeks on it soon, got the headliner ready to go in and the interior re-trimmed now by trimming tonic! Highly recommend him if you need an interior doing!
