1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
been doing a few odd jobs underneath this afternoon and giving it a bit of a freshen up as it got a bit dusty underneath what with paint over spray and general dust, came out nice I'm now stuck until I order a few more bits and pieces.. oh, and some new wheels! yes, it's now grounded with no wheels so limited access to get in and do a few jobs on the interior. still got doors to finish building up and add some deadening whilst I'm in there

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
Today's work involved sound deadening and finishing building doors up, 5 sheets of Silent Coat went into each door and 5 sheets on rear parcel shelf, the doors are rock solid now and made a big difference, best doors I've had the pleasure in deadening! all open and easy access . got 5 sheets left to play with so might do the rear quarters and engine cover. got some heat/sound insulator on order to the engine side of the engine lid and boot floor.
door cards went better than I anticipated, I expected the clips to give me a headache but it went smoothly and they look superb, really happy with them . not happy with the window winders but they'll do for now..

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
they are original ones, after months of wanted ads I decided to renovate them and they turned out OK, sprayed them with what I had left from refurbing the carbs! (stuff from Frost).

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
you really have done a beautiful job of this. How much would a early fastback restored to this standard cost to buy do you think?
Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
I have no idea, what people advertise them for and what they get are 2 different things! I have way more invested in this to ever get my money back but it was never about the money otherwise I wouldn't have replaced half the things on it! as a rough guess I would say £6k but I really don't know..rjbell wrote:you really have done a beautiful job of this. Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
Another how long is a piece of string question, but after a full body resto like this, how long would you hope the paint work would last before more welding and painting would need doing again?
Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
From my experience, assuming that my car was done to the same high level, stored outside all year and driven daily, she has done just over 100k in the last 10 years and now really needs a full rebuild due to rot attacking the thin repair panels!
Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
as long as I own it never! it's a 2nd car and will be kept spotless all year round and garaged, the panels have lasted 40+ years already so I don't see why they can't last another 40! it's all well sealed and painted inside out with all new seals etc..rjbell wrote:Another how long is a piece of string question, but after a full body resto like this, how long would you hope the paint work would last before more welding and painting would need doing again?
it may be a different story if it was kept outside all year round but even then as long as it's well looked after who knows..

How reliable has this been as your daily drive for the last decade?Dave G wrote:From my experience, assuming that my car was done to the same high level, stored outside all year and driven daily, she has done just over 100k in the last 10 years and now really needs a full rebuild due to rot attacking the thin repair panels!
Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
Very reliable indeed, it's been my only car on the road for the last 5 years or so with very few problems (touch wood!).
Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
If I had a garage, mine would reside there too and would have no doubt lasted longer!Marko wrote:as long as I own it never! it's a 2nd car and will be kept spotless all year round and garaged, the panels have lasted 40+ years already so I don't see why they can't last another 40! it's all well sealed and painted inside out with all new seals etc..

As you say Marko, I have not had issue with the original metal, but where there are patch panels and repair panels, a lot of these have needed repair/replacement in the last few years. I was curious of whether the thickness of the repair panels had altered, I bought a cheap repair panel a while back, and measured it at 0.9mm, I then measured the car it was intended for which came in at 1.4mm, considering that repair panels are likely to take the most grief in terms of weathering, I was quite disappointed to say the least. The cills were both replaced on mine around 10 years ago, and I have now patched both of these at least twice since in the last few years, so I'm afraid from my experience the quality of the panels comes into question a lot, as the previous cills were the originals lasting 35years+, why have the replacements become rotten so quickly?!
Alas, I feel these discussions are detracting from your stunning work!
Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
well I was bored today so pulled her out and fitted the rear lap belts and while I was at it i took a few pics, doesn't look too bad!
is this too low? what do people think? wondering whether I'll have problems with speed bumps
engine looks OK now, still wants a good tune up but running a lot better since fixing the accelerator pump on the left hand carb..

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
If mine ends up half as good as this i'll be well happy. It looks awesome!
I'm waiting on my last wing to arrive then it'l be goin in for paint hopefully i'll have it done by christmas. I have also bought the door seals from isp, (cheaper ones) so i'll let you know how i get on with them. did you make any alterations to them to get them to fit any better?? Have you sourced most your stuff from isp??

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
I have bought a few bits and pieces from ISP, I already had the door seals but they were the German type so had to chop them up a bit around the door hinge sections. you will be OK with the ISP ones as they are softer although may not be 100% water tight..

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
got my bump stop bungs from Bug-Box, fast service and a great price! I bought 4 so could do the fronts too but not sure how I'm gonna attach them to the beam! maybe drill and tap an M10 thread? rears should be easy enough to do..
also managed to source a rear armrest so can finish the interior off next week.
still searching for a rear bumper blade but have managed to get the brackets so that's a start. £335 including shipping from Germany is the best price I found so far but considering re-chroming is so expensive it's not that bad. may just treat myself for xmas
