Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
well my car is in many pieces at the moment, ATF fluid in the diff so looking at rebuilding the diff but struggling to find gaskets for it. at this point I'm not doing anything with actual box as it seems fine.
this is the little bugger in question, it was held in with only 3 studs as one was sheared off and a bolt held in the end with silicone!

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
took the diff apart today and all looks quite good, the crown and pinion have no visible wear but there is a slight bit of play before they engage, not sure if this is correct or if it can be adjusted out? I have the brown Bentley manual but not sure where to start or if it's a bad idea to be DIY-ing the play out without correct tools..
I could also do with the 2 gaskets that the flanged shafts are sealed to the case to, I have no idea where to get these from! also need the 2 other gaskets for TC end an also diff to box seal. if push comes to shove I could make the latter and just reseal the others with gasket sealer but I would rather do the job right
Mark.

I can't help with your quest, but want to wish you good luck in finding your bits and getting your lovely looking fasty back on the road.

cheers! there's a couple of guys over in the States helping me out, only problem is the waiting which I could do without but I don't have many options right now other than make my own gaskets..

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
well I think it's pretty conclusive that those 2 seals are ready for swapping out
Governor seal shot.
Pinion seal in a heck of a mess, might as well not bothered having one in there!

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
I've ordered 6 metal clad seals that will be here tomorrow for the less than £15! I'm going to bite the bullet and make my own gaskets it's either that or wait 3 weeks and £50 on 4 gaskets I like a challenge too

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
today I fitted the new front and rear screens along with new chrome inserts, it was a joy to use the new seals, so supple and gave no grief going in! also fitted a better screen whilst I was at it as the old one had lots of marks and chips in it.
the engine and transmission went back in on Saturday but I have a leak from one of the new stub axle seals so will have to redo that one luckily I can do that with just removing the CV joint and stub axle :smokin: all in all got quite a lot done over the weekend.

Looking Very nice Marko, you have been busy.
Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
I'm not finished yet! the eagle eyed will have noticed I ditched the roof aerial today as well, it was my chance to get rid of it whilst the rear screen was out so have filled the hole and put a bit of primer on it until I do it right. got to repaint the rear slam panel (where the oil filler is) soon anyway as I was never happy with it so will blow that in at the same time

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
Having those trims on the seals really finishes it off nicely
Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
I've wanted them for 2 years and finally got them! next on the want list is a badge bar from ISP for some spot lights, I do like my chromeChino wrote:Having those trims on the seals really finishes it off nicely

not on seals though I bought rear reflector seals 18 months ago and they are shot, they look 40 years old I did let them know and they were not interested I might ask Simon if he does any better quality ones, I also need the tail light seals as they are also cracked too..

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
I hope so, most ISP stuff is OK but it's the same with any after-market VW stuff, you just have to be careful and buy the best you can find!

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
seen as though I have some paintwork on the roof to do because I removed the bee sting aerial, I thought I would sort the rear slam panel out as I was never happy with it.. it had some ripples in the metalwork and wasn't prepared very well so it's getting a bit of TLC!

Re: 1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic
all primed and on 2nd round of stopper just catch any of those small imperfections when it'[s all painted up I have an "<OIL" sticker to go on and I'm also giving the dipstick/filler cap a bit of a freshen up with new gaskets and a repaint.
this is where the silly aerial used to be, I've tried to keep the repair as local as possible as I don't want to paint the whole roof!
