John's 1973 fuel injection fast back restoration

Post by Johnjlong » 6th January 2013 - 5:44pm

I bought this Fastback about 3 years ago. I was coming up to where I wanted to be on my Beetle project and wanted something new to start working on when I was done. I've been working on it slowly because of shift work but I have lots of body work done now. At the moment, I'm stripping the engine and getting parts soda blasted for the rebuild. Once that's done, I'll get started on the interior and getting it re-sprayed.

I had to replace the whole front section. I acquired another front panel from Type 3 detectives and was able to do the repair job.

I made up two supports on casters for manoeuvrability in my garage.

I sourced a set of front wings. They were in pretty good condition. I got these from Type 3 detectives also.

A panel beater friend, Ted did a fantastic job on the bonnet by cutting out the rust and welding in new steel. It was finished off with leading.

You can see more of Teds good work in this one. He's some man for one man.

I dropped out the engine and gearbox. I have to do a big clean up in the engine bay and strip down the engine. I'm getting there!

I removed the flywheel and fitted and new crankshaft oil seal.

I'll be taking off the engine heads to grind in the valves seeing as I've gone this far.

Some of my engine parts soda lasted, primed, painted and lacquered. Looking good. Done by Sodablast in Cork.

Looks great John, you don't see rear inner wings that solid very often!
I love your trolly as well - it looks just the job!!

It's probably a tax free one - at least in the UK. Try to salvage the 3" x 1/2" embossed metal plate from the end of the front panel (same panel that has the chassi plate). It's confirmation of the build date, if you ever need it, though you can get a Birth Certificate for a fee instead.

Yes, it's surprisingly solid for a British car.
Dave.

Hi all, I know I haven't been on with a while I sold on my 73 beetle but I still have my 73 fi fastback
Lots of work done on her I just don't have time at the moment I'm in no hurry it won't be
Rushed she's safe in my shed and I have every intention of finishing her and keeping her as she is a solid car will keep ye posted. John.
