1973 Variant 1600E

Post by polopervert » 14th October 2013 - 10:26pm

The car I mentioned in "The Workshop" some time ago is now mine! Got it home on Saturday but haven't had much of a chance to look at it yet. Here are a couple of pictures - I'll put more up at the weekend. This is the first time it has been out since 1986.

Looks very nice. Another Marathon Blue metallic, like the Fastback that's just appeared in Bristol.

Had a wee Variant starting party and delighted to report that we got the car running on Friday night without too much drama, well after we'd sorted a gremlin or two out. I think the previous owner had been at it more than he'd let on! Traced almost complete lack of power to ignition switch being unplugged! Wires in it looked like they'd got a bit of a heating - I'm guessing yer man had been winding her over a lot at one time but all seems well at the minute. After 27 years however all fuel in tank had evaporated leaving a lovely coating of rust in the tank so with the aid of two plastic bottles we got her running. So first job either will be to get another tank or to get tank treated and tidy at her a bit until April when she becomes tax free! Below is a picture of several very happy men with an old VW brought back to life taken shortly before the beer was broken out to "wet the wean's head" :D

The fuel injection tanks are a bit critical at the bottom - look at the bottom of this web-page to see why.

Don't use a coating after cleaning out, or it can clog up the venturi that keeps the inner cup filled.

There are so many nice cars coming out of hiding at the moment, great news, good luck with getting her back on the road.

Thank you Dave, I had considered taking the tank to a local firm who blast and steam clean tanks before repair and recoating/repainting and offer a years guarantee but from what you tell me I would be wise to stay clear of coatings. I used a DIY coating years ago on a motorbike tank and it wasn't pleasant! They said to me that the fact that it is an FI tank makes no difference to them, perhaps I need to quiz them a bit further. What other course is open to me? Should I just get inside of tank cleaned thoroughly either myself of by this crowd and leave it bare or look for another tank. If I left it bare would that not be inviting more rust?

There's a procedure for pickling tanks somewhere in the old factory workshop books. I think it's hydrochloric for derusting and thorough rinsing then ends up with a phosphating treatment - a bit like the stuff rust treatment contains. There is a narrow passage forming a venturi that creates a stream of fuel and draws more in to keep the inner cup filled. Just avoid anything that coats the metal with a layer of plastic or resin material - ie something that could block the structure down there.
