Bumpers 71 Fastback

Post by The Baron Greenback » 26th May 2014 - 5:08pm

The bumpers on my car have some localised corrosion at each end but are otherwise solid. Unfortunately, the corrosion that is there has created a hole in each one.

Given how rare they are, can they be restored and does anyone know anywhere in the North West area?

They are surprisingly prone to rusting through, but I would have thought there are still a lot out there with poor chrome but reasonably sound for replating. That's not going to be cheap - unless you are thinking of a paint finish instead. You're unlikely to get one properly rechromed for less than £300, but ask around.

You could try Niphos plating in Crewe who are quite close to the train station and football ground, but after getting the holes repaired Dave's estimate may still not cover the cost.

Once it gets to that level it must be worth looking at the new stainless equivalent - see the Harrington site

I am assuming that the late ghia style bumpers are pretty much the same, although I recall that VW made some subtle alterations around 1972 to produce a universal rear bumper that would fit the T14 ghia, T3 and T4.

I remember the front bumper changed for 1972, with a cut-away corner so it cleared the Ghia bodywork better, but I hadn't heard of a rear bumper change. This mod also resulted in the rubber inserts for the L-spec trim being the same part front and back, as the more-curved front was offset by the shorter back edge. My parts book doesn't do much after March '72 though, so there may have been changes to the rears too.
