1972 Volkswagen 1600 Type 3 Variant RHD Australian Import

Imported from Australia in around 2010 by South West Splitz and sold to a trader in 2011 who never registered him.
We purchased the car in 2014 and registered him. This took 12 months due to VW birth certificate back log delays. So first registered in the UK on 1st June 2015 the car is both tax and MOT exempt, though he will be sold with a full MOT for buyers piece of mind.

Exterior & Body - The car has had a respray at some time in the distant past most of which has now fallen off to reveal the original sun burnt paint beneath giving the car great ‘patina’. Other than the paint, wheels and a subtle lowering job the car is very original.
The car has only had one piece of welding that I’m aware of. It’s on the nearside engine mount but doesn’t appear to be from rot so must have cracked through use. He does now require one small piece of welding behind the boot lid seal at the bottom right hand edge. There are a couple of crusty window frame edges. The car is very solid underneath.

Interior - All the interior trim is original, save for a Flat 4 wood rim steering wheel and the front door card have been re-boarded. It's in great condition for a 46 year old car. The front seat belts have been updated to inertia type but the original VW branded fixed belts that match the rear belts are included in the sale. The rear boot mat is not the original.

Engine - The engine is not the original to the car but is 99% complete and original with regards to tinware, fuel system, ancillaries, etc are concerned. The coil for example is Bosch branded ‘Made in Australia’. It just had a NOS muffler installed along with all the original primary heater boxes (underneath pic show the old exhaust). The tinware and fan housing have been recently powder coated. Unfortunately, the engine is beyond its endfloat wear limit and needs a rebuild (it knocks on start up from cold) however included in the sale is the original engine case that he arrived from Australia with that has been align bored. There’s also a new cam, new oil pump, original pushrods and original rockers that I’m including so the new owner can have the engine rebuilt to short block plus barrels and pistons, before then swapping over the heads and all the external parts. (for info the engine is 1641cc with Engle W110 cam and has Scat rockers and cut to length pushrods, though none of this can be reused!)

Gearbox - Original IRS, stays in all gears, with no whining. It would benefit from a new shift bush.

Brakes - Original in full working order, with recently rebuilt front brake calipers.
Steering - Original, would benefit from a new steering dampener.

Also included in the sale is a spare boot lid & boot lid glass, original steering wheel and a replacement 'nearly' uncracked dashboard.
