Re: 71 rhd square 49k 2 owner
hahahahahahahahaha
driver floor that didnt exist!
passenger floor rear
and today broady popped round and we tried to lower the front but due to the bastardist grub screw ever despite all the tools we had to hand we couldnt budge the last screw!! even welded allan keys to it!!
managed to tiger seal underside too along all weld lines what a messy job that is!
so slammin it can wait im gonna start on both doors (gotta swap locks and glass onto the oz ones i got)
then the exhaust needs removing and sorting
also gotta sand and primer the front wings
and go through the brakes
and sort the engine
and attach the lights
and weld the seat runners in
and and and and so plenty to keep me busy
but itza coming to a road near you soon!!

okay quick minor update!!!
just gotta weld the seat runner to each channel later tday and that should be
the END of the welding!!!!
(thats until winter again when i can see some kind of rollcage being built just to
keep me busy and stop flogging it lmfao)
the rear floor corners really have come out better than i expected considering ive just
made them up and from underside the curve and height really does look the biz so thats
a massive brownie point im awarding mysen
so its onto the doors next to swap locks and glass and wait till u see my door logos!!!
and look how much wire ive got left its gonna be close for the seat runnerzzz!!!

Re: 71 rhd square 49k 2 owner
wow things are moving now!!
the seat runners on the chassis tube were mint but the ones sitting on the channels were totally fkkkd so i made some and welded the small runner piece that the seat slides through to them and simply welded that in turn to the floor and its turned out real neat and i now have my front seats in!!!! and the slide forwards and backwards lmfao!

Re: 71 rhd square 49k 2 owner
well well well today the front of the square was slammed and yes its loooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww:eek:
heres a little helper...i found that after removing the wheels its better to the car down as low as poss onto stands cos when levering the 30mm ball joints off they literally move the whole car when you using the wrecking bar:eek:
okay...i know its been covered on the samba and thats where i got the info but ill explain what happened on mine too cos i like waffling lol
my aim is to loosen the lower trailing arms so i can push one end of the beam out so it can b turned and then replaced.
firstly i loosened the 30mm bolt on the upper trailing arm on the driver side....<<the pic shows the wrecking bar and 30mm socket but i didnt undo this side>>
after whackin the arm with a hammer to release the ball joint it makes the drum itself free to move
this picture shows the passenger side and the bolts i undid...4 some reason the driver side upper arm had 2 bolts...
the lower bolt in the pic is the same both sides...these need removing and with a small instrument gently tap from the passenger side and it will push the beam out the other side..
heres the beam lowered with the bolts marked to remove...the arrowed beam showing the part that comes out
now when the beam comes out simply pull it slowly until it pops out the grooves, twist it up to lower and push it back in and tighten all bolts...that easy...
here it is with the front lowered and the rear untouched
and the christened tarmac!!

Re: 71 rhd square 49k 2 owner
idiots guide to lowering a type 3 rear end with IRS
undo all the bolts shown in red, and use a wrecking bar as the bolts will be tight as fook...
a special tool required is the one shown below... its an M8 6 edged 12 star bit... a full kit of these types of tool are around £27 from machine mart or similar. It undoes the 6 bolts holding the drive shaft to the drum...DONT try using an allan key it will round it fast.
after all bolts are undone and the drum is free you need to seperate the bar that sits in between the spring plates....be careful when you remove the last bolt as the drum will fall to the floor so mind your leg/foot
then using jemmy bars, massive screwdrivers, lever bars, or anything that will get between the plate and body you have to get the plates away from the body...mine was surprisingly easy and took 2 minutes...it can take hours!
the arrowed bit is the rubber that seats in the hole...make sure you get this back the same for snug refit...
and when the bar comes out you simply turn the plate and push back in.
the pic below is actually 3 splines but ive lowered it 2 as im running 14'' alloys and as you will see below its damn slammed lol
so heres the result and its wicked yeah lmfao
but i have to slam the other side yet and this should give me a few more mm clearance btwn the tyre and arch becos as of now its very very close...if there is a clearance issue once both sides are even then i may put the other pair of 155.65 tyres on the rear to get clearance as i want it low.
more pics tomoz night with passenger side done

Re: 71 rhd square 49k 2 owner
I certainly will dude...this really is a long term project with the end result never being attained
so that i end keeping it cos i have a bad habit of selling mot'd vws lol..
anyway...got both rear wingz fitted today plus beading all nice and tight....also rear shocks
and have ordered a pair of KYB shortened shocks for the front
however....poss problems ahead...
with the 14'' alloyz being 5.5'' wide the rear tyres at 175.70 are badly
against the wing edge....tomorrow im fitting the fronts that are 155.60 to see
how they sit as i have another pair of this size and will fit these if there isnt any rubbing.
should there be a problem i can either raise the back end (dont want to) or i can sack the
14's and fit stock steelies on skinny tyres to get em tucked under the wing.
so will update asap on the tyre situation...
also managed to get the exhaust off today and this requires 3 small bits of welding
so thats a job to do asap plus i dont have any front bumper hangers and im making a pair
from some scrap metal i got from a mate...

Re: 71 rhd square 49k 2 owner
cheers dude but i take it your 15s are the standard 4.5'' wide as opposed to mine being
an inch wider plus the square is very lower therefore even more rub!!
I want looooooow square so im gonna sell the alloys (in sale section now)
and go steelies...i like steelies actually....

Re: 71 rhd square 49k 2 owner
okay peeps its a small update but a good un:D
front bumper hangers had crumbled in my hand when removing and i was gonna get some but decided on cheating and made some and welded the tips to the inside of the bumper:eek: but if i need to remove its easy job and smooth the weld off..bumper is thick enough to take the weld...
ive then bought some M10 zinc bolts and made 2 holes
then fixed em to the body
and wahay lookin good
also managed to white stone chip the front inner arches and sort a minor water leak that was doin me suede in
also look what arrived;) shorty short shox
and ive decided to run stock tyres at the rear 165.80 and the fronts were gonna be 165.50 but when i pickd the steelies up from me mate gaz the fronts had 195.45 so i thought WTF lets see what they llok like and i love em!!
jobs to do::
fit other wing
fit lights
fit shox front
fit exchangers and exhaust
bleed brakes
fit fuel tank
connect wiring to main box
sort clutch cable front end
create battery holding mount
fit seatbelts
change oil
get front screen changed thru insurance
