412LS Variant - UUB 820M - back to the road in 2011
Hello all, thought is was about time I documented the recommissioning of my Type 4.
I got the car in September 2008, I was planning on starting work on the car straight away, but other project work got in the way, so it was put into storage in a local barn,
Being collected in 2008:
Last time it was on the road:
The car was moved to my home a few weeks ago, so work could start.
First start after draining stale fuel, cleaning fuel lines and changing filter:
Current job is stripping and rebuilding brakes and replacing rotten pipes, flexies and cylinders:
Will post more info and photos as it happens!

Is that a rear window wipe on there? Wonder what that was taken from and how its connected up?
And what a straight looking 412 as well, will we see it at any shows this year?

I've seen that written up - maybe in an old VW Motoring - just got to check through the boxes in the loft and elsewhere!
Dave.

As Dave has said before, the rear wash wipe it is likely to be an aftermarket job, however the switch on the dash looks very factory, I'll get some photos up soon. It still works too!
Today has been successful, I've completed the brake rebuild, so first job in the morning is the bleed the entire system, luckily I have my 11 year old to assist with the brake pedal.

Well amazingly I have been able to bleed the system and (currently) it appears to hold pressure. Lots of wire brushing and Plusgas over the last few days, and some heat applied today have got all the bleed nipples out complete.
All four brakes appear to work after their strip and rebuild, however there is a problem with the passenger side front caliper, there are two bleed nipples. According to the Haynes manual, the lower one is for draining and the upper one is for bleeding, I can easily get fluid through the bottom one, but the top one is dry, so I can only imagine that the internals of the caliper are gummed up unless anyone has any other ideas?
I'm off back out now to try bleeding the clutch.

Mmm, just had a thought, I'll try bleeding the misbehaving caliper update down, so the air is near the working bleed nipple.

Can't hurt to try. Good luck with it all

Got fluid through the caliper in the end, all the brakes appear to work fine and the system is holding pressure, unfortunately there was a tiny dribble of fluid on the brake pedal after I bled the system it hasn't come back, but I suspect that the master cylinder in about done for.
Better news is that I now have a working clutch!
I didn't make it to Stanford Hall, but at least I had a productive day.

For the first time in over two decades, my 412 moved under it's own power today

That's really cool. Looks like the good weather is helping you get some momentum together with this. I really hope you can make it to a show this year. Have you shown your 11 year old how to handle sandpaper!!!
